Is my AV amp toast?

I have a sony str dh800. A couple of days ago it started to make a pop just after turning on. Today I turned it on and it made a pop again then just went made a very loud oscillating tone now comes from the unit. I have unplugged all the inputs and even moved it to a different plug to make sure it want some weird electrical noise. Nothing seems to work. Does it sound like its failed? Is it a fixable problem or new unit time? Its not great timing I just threw my DSLR in a river last month.
If everything other than the speakers are disconnected and the amp still emits a hum, then it sounds like a component within the amp has failed.
Could be something as simple as a failed power supply capacitor but, unless you are a dab hand with a multimeter and soldering iron, then an electronics repair shop is your best bet.

Looks like it was about £300 new, so probably worth around £100-120 used now, which means a repair probably isn't cost effective as it does sound like it could be 'toast'. You might be able to pick up something similar used (perhaps a Denon given the other thread on here recently with lots of owners of very old Denons, myself included).

Yes, constant hum with no inputs at all, just the speakers hooked up. I think it is capacitor related as it takes maybe a minute or so after start up before a deafening buzz starts. I hadn't thought of taking it to a shop though I normally just fix things myself but this is probably more than a screw in unit which is my electrical limit. I have dropped it in to the local place now so hopefully find out what it was soon enough.
I was browsing trying to work out what a replacement would cost and bumped into one I like, coincidentally a Denon AVRX2100. If the shop says its uneconomical I think that's where I'll be looking. I like the idea of something robust.
Yep, throwing it in was super silly. I still feel that way but lesson learned about cheap tripods.
