Today I listened to the Naim Muso at John Lewis as In short the sound was distorted lacking clarity.
In 2009 I purchased a Naim Unity with pmc db1 speakers which was a far superior product with clarity and quality of sound the system was sold when I moved property.

I'm looking for a quality package of speakers and system is this achievable without the £ 3000 outlay ok a naim uniqute2 with speakers or which systems do you recommend
cheers

Must have been something wrong with the Mu-So you heard. Mine is just about perfect, and I've not seen anything less than glowing reports in the press.

Go to a Naim dealer and get a proper home demo of the Muso.

Indeed the reviews in the press are very good , but when you turn the sound up the clarity disappeared.????

As said earlier, maybe try a proper demo? What struck me was the clarity right across the volume range. For it's size, its a remarkable piece of kit.

Agreed. A very good piece of kit for the size and price.

Expecting to be able to crank it up on a huge John Lewis sales floor, with the same volumes of air as about 30,000 normal living rooms may be a tad optimistic though.

Arrange a proper demo in a proper shop (or at home ideally) before writing it off.

When i was looking for one, I listened to a demo in John Lewis and was very underwhelmed by it, but (i thought), i'd get one and give it a go.

It is a totally different beast when it is properly set up at home, so anyone looking at getting one should arrange a demo in a 'proper' environment first!

Anyway, the result of me getting it home made me buy a second for the kitchen/diner.

that's what I will do next, why is it so different at home vs store and what is a proper demo?
cheers

The most obvious difference is the scale, ie a shop will be massive compared to your house.

Also, the background noise in a shop will completely change what you are hearing.

Indeed, as above, and the positioning etc is quite important with these, and they are just not set up properly in a department store.

'A proper demo' meaning at a dealer in a listening room.

Also, the added benefit of a gazillion internet radio stations along with a reasonably good Iphone app (others i think are now available) make it a pleasure to use/listen to.

Set up at ear height and relatively close to you.

Listen to high bit rate encoded music - you will be blown away.

MuSo = superb!

Better still, in your own home.

I went into Fenwicks in Newcastle to demo a B&W zeppelin. It sounded awful and they didn't have anywhere to try it properly. I went across the road to JL and it sounded pretty poor there too. That's when a helpful chap unplugged it and took it to a demo room. I bought it there and then. From what I've heard of the MuSo, I'd be suprised if it didn't please on a proper demo.

I had a listen to a MUSo in John Lewis with a number of different sound file formats and while it wasn't spectacular with 128kbs MP3 rips, it was very very good with anything higher, to the point that it was difficult to tell the difference between 320kbs rips and lossless.
I am not sure it could fill a large room with a lot of sound but for a all in one compact I haven't heard better. I have kind of fell in love with the Naim sound signature and I think the credit card is going to have to be called on for a UnitiLite very soon.

I listened to mine in a shop, it's sounded good but not amazing, got it home , set it up and it sounded and still does sound incredible, how it deals with the bass is totally at odds to its size, love listening to mu-so it's reinvigorated my enjoyment of just listening to music, can spend hours listening to loads of different stuff.

Id see if you can borrow one from a dealer or hear one in a listening room and not shop floor.

I agree with some of the other people here, the MuSo is an incredible bit of kit, sure it wasn't the listening environment? It's such a punchy little thing!
