I'd like to buy a new 40" tv this weekend and seen a good deal on a JVC with a soundbar and sub throw in for free.
There doesn't seem to be much info online and Currys appear to have the monopoly on selling them. Even the JVC.co.uk website has no details on them and just refer you to the currys website.
Are they the new matsui/alba/bush of today? Don't want budget basement stuff, but not interested in forking out loads.
I've always regarded JVC as just above middle of the road stuff and pretty solid and reliable. Am I better off getting highly a praised Samsung or Panasonic?
Budget is £400ish. This is the offer I have seen. It doesn't say that it's a smart tv, but i have virgin tv so wouldn't use that.

I'd look at an LG, great value at Argos £369 for the 42" Freeview HD version http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/2...
Good picture and reliable.

Unfortunately JVC are another brand which has had their name licenced - they no longer make any TVs themselves.
from Wikipedia: "In April 2008, JVC announced that it was closing its TV plants in East Kilbride, Scotland and Japan. This left it with one plant in Thailand. It stated it would outsource European production to an OEM.
JVC TVs for North America are now being manufactured by AmTRAN Video Corporation along with distribution, service, and warranty under license from JVC Kenwood.
In Europe, Dixons Carphone, owner of Currys Digital and PC World has a similar arrangement with JVC Kenwood."

Same for Hitachi, and they are noticeably poorer pictures than a slightly more expensive Samsung/LG/Panasonic etcfrom Wikipedia: "In April 2008, JVC announced that it was closing its TV plants in East Kilbride, Scotland and Japan. Well, i bought one as it seemed a good deal. I just needed a mid range mid sized tv for a flat and for £250 for a 40" is seemed ideal.
Anyway. i got it back, fired it up and realised what a mistake I had made. The interface was so ugly and clumsy and it felt so naff to use. I tried to connect it to the wifi and a permanent message appeared on screen saying 'wifi card not found'.
After googling around it's a common problem and i then noticed the software is the same as used in Bush tellys. So, it really is bargain basement stuff and to be avoided.
Took it straight back and got a philips 42" smart 3d tv. Got to say, i am really really impressed with it!
The interface is super slick, feature packed and the build and picture quality are leagues ahead.
3d is fun, but i'll probably never make use of it and the ambilight is pretty cool too.
