hi, i have just bought myself a new tv ( http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/tv-dvd-blu-ray/televi... ) and need a little help with setting up the sound system that was attatched to my old tv!

to have the sound from my sky box/playstation/mac mini, i used to have my blu ray player connected via an optical cable to an optical output on the old tv. problem being, my new tv doesn't have an optical out, instead, if i remember correctly, has an SPDIF Coax out?

i have found convertors on maplin online store which change the optical to a phono but i'm not sure which one i need or which one is correct?

i'm thinking this mght be the one i need? http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/digital-audio-optical-ph...

i dont need it to be an amazing, super expensive, all singing, all dancing thing, i just want to have the sound come out of my surround sound speakers. i only watch movies from my computer and tv and i'm not overly fussed if it doesnt sound like i'm at the cinema!

any hlpe is greatly appreciated!

That converter would be fine for what you say. SP-DIF is the same signal going over optical or phono cables so converting between them is a trivial task.

It would be worth double checking though, this review http://www.whathifi.com/panasonic/tx-p50x50b/revie... suggests the TV does have an optical.

Also bear in mind a few things, its unlikely you'll get proper 5.1 DD surround by going through the TV like this and also the TV appears appears to only have 2 HDMI inputs. What is your audio system and how many inputs doesbit have and what are they? There might be some better advice we can give if we know this.

thanks for the reply jimbob!

i googled the tv earlier and that review came up but this isn't actualy the correct tv so i am unsure why it comes up?

i will get more details later of the full system i have but it is just a standard blu ray player with 5.1 surround sound speakers. there is an optical in on the blu ray player along with a couple other ports and the tv has 2 hdmi's and the coax out along with a couple other ports...

i have purchased an HDMI switcher with the sky box, ps3 and mac in the inputs and the output goes to HDMI 1 on the tv and HDMI 2 will be the input from the blu ray player...

I had the same problem with a new tv and had optical fibres and cables going everywhere and lots of changing inputs etc. then discovered that in the Tv menu, audio return channel (ARC) was turned off, as soon as i turned it on whatever was on the screen the sound came out the surround sound.
