As Vex mentioned, it depends on how serious you are into calibration. Some will be happy with a THX optimizer disk that comes with many Blu-Rays / DVD's. The next step would be something like the Spears & Munsil hand forged disc which covers most aspects of basic calibration without needing a meter or pattern generator. This helps with things more advanced than just contrast, sharpness & brightness, but doesn't go as deep into settings as CMS adjustment.Enthusiasts might opt for one of the cheaper SpectraCal kits and a budget meter to correct elements in the displays CMS if it has one.
