I have a basic home cinema setup with an Onkyo 626 AV amp and a set of Wharfedale DX1 speakers, the Subwoofer has always been a bit hit and miss, put some music on and there was nothing coming from it, wobbled the connector on the back and got some output, then nothing.

I thought the cable was iffy so just tried a normal rca lead and it was the same, nothing, tested the continuity of the original lead and it seems ok though I did notice the centre prong seemed to move out when I withdrew it from the subwoofer, everything points to the cable but haven't another specific sub cable to try it with.

I am guessing a subwoofer lead is just a fancy RCA lead ?

Any suggestions ?

Yes you can use any RCA cable for a sub, though long runs do tend to benefit from using one with better insulation from noise.

Is the sub actually turning on? Some subs have a standby mode that then kicks in when a signal is detected at the input. This can fail (sometimes the relay sticks that switches the sub on) and if it's a KEF sub then a good chance this has happened. If it is possible, tried switching the sub to manual operation (you'll just need to remember to switch it off when not in use.

sounds like a loose connection in the sub.
Should be able to take it apart and see if anything is loose

I got a 9 mm headphone to 2 rca cable from my box of audio cables and plugged it in my phone and the sub is working, well it produced some suitably bassy interpretation of the music I was playing, I have a new sub cable due today so will try that, failing that its a problem with the amp though I would be suprised at that as its only a low voltage line level out isnt it a sub output, cant imagine that will have blown, am hoping the cable remedies it.

Does the speaker setup pass? If so it may be the quality of your music or the source of data in general. Also, My pioneer needs the speakers set to "small" so that the sub takes over the low frequencies
