Looking for some help please.
need a new 40inch tv , and a new surround sound system, with dvd.
At present the surround and dvd is 1 unit. But not sure if this is the best way . Better to separate this out.?
Space is at a premium , so I only want a couple of speakers maximum.
Any ideas , recommendations.thanks
Will be linked into a sky hd box.

A few ideas some come to mind, but not sure what you actually want..you say you want surround, but then only a few speakers?

Buy everything second-hand, apart form the disc play (they are dirt cheap new and will give you all the smart functionality).

Buy TV purely on it's picture quality - everything else is superfluous.

For 40" tv's, have a look at Samsung UE40H6400 ($429 at JL) or Sony KDL-40605B (circa £400), about the best for sub £500 - I've got the previous model Sony 42" KDL-42w654 and I'm very happy with it, this supposedly has better picture quality. The Samsung has all UK catch up services though if that's of concern.

Sony DVD player for £60 - What HiFi 5 Star (What HiFi and Sony arejust a touch Nepotistic, allegedly) http://www.richersounds.com/product/blu-ray/sony/b...

Or if you want spend a bit more, this was a product of the year 2014 in the under £300 class; yours for £179, and purportedly good with CD and HiRes http://www.richersounds.com/product/blu-ray/sony/b...

You can either go down the amp/speakers or soundbar route, I prefer the former.

Ok, I'd go with amp/speakers for best SQ, but a sounder is much less intrusive into the room. You could go sub/sat as a sort of compromise, perhaps Cambridge Audio Minx, which are excellent (IMO) especially for the price.

For your budget, I'd go second hand. TVs don't hang onto their value, and at that size, you will be paying very little for what would have been a really pricy and decent screen very recently.

I've got the sony 5200 dvd player. It does a fine job, even the stuff like netflix and iplayer works ok (not that I use them too much). Only downside is that it is pretty lightweight and can make a bit of a noise, especially if the disc is not perfectly balanced. Mine is in a cabinet, I might complain if it wasn't.
