First of all, I'm not even sure if what I want to do is feasible!

My 7 year old son has been asking about the vinyl collection that belonged to my mum. However - I have nothing to play it on.

I've seen a few integrated turntable/speaker combos but I would imagine the quality is questionable?

On the other hand, I'm not keen to have to remortgage my house to listen to my mums old albums from the 60s biggrin

I have an AV amp already, wondering if there is a budget-ish turntable I can hook up to it? Or would that be too simple?

For budget, anything from pro-ject at your price level. You can pick up an open box sale one from Richer or Super-fi quite often for £100-150. They're lovely bits of kit for the money.

Pro-ject (Essential) or Rega (RP1); you'll need a small phono stage as well as I doubt your AV amp has this if recent - cheap ones are about £20, £50 is probably a sweet spot for those 'tables, something like a Musical Fidelity V90 (on sale at richersounds; no affiliation etc...) for example.

Thanks all, gives me something to go on.

So:

&

And then I assume I need two cables - one to connec the turntable to the phono 'thing' and then one to connect that to the AV Amp? (Obviously I am a proper hi-fi expert!)

Or if you want an "all-in-one" solution:

Single unit appeals - how would that compare to the separate phono stage linked to above?

Pretty good from what I've heard, but you'll want to audition them both yourself rather than taking other peoples' word on it.
