We're considering whether to cancel our SKY TV subscription, which is my name, and begin a "new customer" account in the wife's name. Better deals available. We'll get a new box with the new sub, but whats to stop us just using the new viewing card in the existing box and keeping all the recordings on there? I presume that programs are stored on the HDD with some sort of encryption, which is unlocked only by the correct viewing card?

Is there any way of keeping access to the recordings, or are they going to be lost forever if we swap? Not afraid of a little work if necessary to copy or swap HDDs if that's the solution.

Thanks in advance

When I looked at this, the viewing card has to be active to view any content. And some of the content is encrypted to the specific card that recorded it. So swapping hard drives wouldn't work.

I just ripped anything I wanted to keep (or downloaded from elsewhere).

Does that work if you're both at the same address, particularly if you have the same surname?

No.
Wifey normally signs up with her maiden name and different bank details.
