Currently looking to upgrade our TV. Looking for something no bigger than 40" (won't fit in the alcove it needs to go in otherwise) but I'm undecided on whether to go for something 4K or not (not interested in 3D really as can't see it ever being used) and would prefer something 'smart' as well. Most likely is that the majority of the time it will get used watching SD and HD freeview with a bit of Internet stuff (YouTube,I player, Netflix etc) but it seems most manufacturers are going 4K now so pondering whether it makes sense to switch now.
Few friends of mine are happy with their Samsungs and I noticed the UE40JU6400 for £500 which would be top of my budget. Has anyone got suggestions/recommendations for alternatives etc?
Should also note our current tv was a handmedown and the last tv I bought was a 32"crt so any tips on what to look for would be good as well. Probably looking to buy at JL if possible due to the warranty and the fact I can get a small discount through work.

Yes plan is to go and have a look at a couple, I see richer sounds have the ue40ju6000 for £400 as well as a few curved versions and some LG's for reasonable looking prices as well. Should say although the last tv I bought was crt the current set is a 32" flat screen 'HD ready' Medion (Aldi) set we were gifted.
Are you saying "a few friends are happy with Samsung", or "few friends..."?.. as in, not many of them are happy with Samsung?
If it's the former then I am a happy owner of 2x Samsung TVs. One, our 40" TV, is about 5 years old now - so it came out before SMART but is a 3D TV that we've never used in 3D. It was simply the best 2D picture we could find this side of £2K (it was £800 at the time). And although it's not an LED TV, it displays very convincing "black" colours.
It had some apps and a sort of app "shop" where you could select some to download and install. Over time though, many of these have been withdrawn including (annoyingly) the YouTube app which, they claim, is no longer supported by YouTube. Why they couldn't just leave it installed on my TV instead of removing it altogether though, I don't know.
Recently we bought a 55" SMART 4K Samsung for just under £900. It's quite spectacular so I suspect a 40" equivalent will be equally so.
If I'm honest, my older 40" Samsung is my favourite. The responses from input commands are quicker than the newer one, and the whole machine is heavier, indicating (to me) a higher standard of build quality. There are other "tells" too, like the stand which is steel/chrome as opposed to lightweight plastic one that came with the newer TV.
Neither of the TVs have ever failed to play any downloaded film or TV programme I've tried from my USB HDD but the newer one can't "see" the films stored on my NAS, whereas the older one plays them just fine. It's not a problem for us because of the way we have things set-up in the house (a division of the kids watching TV in the playroom from the NAS, and us in the lounge watching off broadcast signals or the USB HDD).
Might be worth checking - if you can and need to - whether your NAS will work with the newer SMART TVs.
