I'm looking at getting a record player and start collecting some vinyl (90s indie) don't really want to go down the route of seperates and speakers is there anything else that's a little smaller that has its own speaker built in. Thanks

Why? By the 90s CD and digital was the main source for music. A cheap turntable will always sound cheap! You can't have the speakers built in as this will ruin the sound!! To make it worth while you need a reasonable turntable, plus a phono amp that you can then plug into your existing system. Do you even have a system to start from?

Have a look at Richer Sounds. They have some USB turntables that'll enable you to use a computer and get the music on a device of your choice.

Stick with MP3, a non seperates 'record player' will be dire beyond words.

You could buy a deck with a built in preamp and powered speakers to reduce the box count.

As above, visit Richer Sounds or similar, get them to show you what it should sound like even without spending big money.

True enough. The whole point of vinyl is that it isn't absent minded and convenient listening. I liken it to the difference between Chanoyu, the Japanese tea making ceremony, and plopping a bag of Tetley in a chipped mug.

That said, my Mum has one of these:

And she's perfectly happy with it, mainly because it sounds just like the cheap record player she had in 1965...

speakers built into a turntable - recipe for disaster! I listen to vinyl as main source and support it all the way, but as has been said, unless done well, it really will sound horrible! worth considering separates if you can...

With apologies for hijacking the OPs thread but I would be really interested in recommendations for a modern turntable system. I am thinking of getting into vinyl and have a full separate system including amp and not really sure were to start with respect to a turntable . All feedback appreciated.

Thanks

Depends on your budget... especially if you have no LPs to start with... Will also need a phono stage unless your pre has this built in...

Or buy a turntable that outputs at line level.

Thanks for the replies guys- as you can probably tell this is not my specialist subject ! My amp is probably overspecced for my needs but is a Yamaha RX-V750 AV receiver and DSP-AX750SE AV Amplifier- it seems to have a lot of functionality and assume that it has a phono stage but will need to check manual. In terms of budget I assume that a decent player could be had for a budget of c £250ish but have no feel for this. I do enjoy listening to music and would really like to experience it in the vinyl format so would prefer not to skimp on spec of turntable.

I think the RXV750 has a phono stage, and if so the Pro-ject Essential II will be more than adequate:

Project is a good first turntable. Rega is the next step up.
