Evening all.

At the moment i have an Onkyo 309 amp which is brilliant. I have 2x mission speakers and 1x paradigm sub which has unfortunately gone. Any bass causes really horrible noises so i presume it has blown.

I'd like to replace the 2 mission and sub but no idea where to start. The sub is fed by a single phono type cable and the speakers are dual wired.

I'd like to replace the lot with similar but understand this will be costly. Am I better replacing the lot, including amp, with a conventional sound bar set up? I do love my amp.

David.

I think I'd just be replacing the sub. If the other speakers are ok, why replace them?

You'd be disappointed with a soundbar. I have one, and it's better than the tv speakers by a mile, but even with the bass unit/amp/receiver unit, it can't compete. Soundbars are great as an interim measure, or if you've no space for proper speakers.

Buy a good used sub, enjoy.

Which speakers exactly do you have?

As said, if you like them keep them, and a soundbar is not a replacement for a more traditional set-up.

If you like the Mission sound you might consider a used pair of 751 (bookshelf) or 752 (floorstanding) speakers to replace whatever you have, assuming that's not what you already own. Mission 751 or 752's are about £150-£200 a pair. If you already have the 751/752 there is always the 754, they are a bit rare but you can get a pair for about £400. These are arguably the best speakers Mission ever made.

As for sub, used is an option, Mission did a few (I have the 75AS but these are very rare indeed, the 73as and 78as are a bit more common). I did have a Yamaha YST-FSW150 and it actually sounded fine, looks like the Yamaha NS-SW200 is their current offering. Oh, whatever you decide you are after an 'active' (not passive) sub, that is one which has it's own amplifier, rather then being powered from your amp.

I dismantled it last night to see what's damaged. looks like the outer edge has come away. Strangely there is no model number on the sticker.

Can i just stick any sub of the same size in there?

You've just blown it up. YOu could look to replace the driver if you are handy or replace the entire sub with something which suits your budget.

If you are interested in replacing the drive unit I would give Wilmslow Audio a call and see if they can help.

YOu then need to work out why it has blown - check your settings, have you got the gain on max or something?

Thanks, it's fairly old and it has taken some serious abuse over the years so i'm satisfied i've got my money's worth. I would love to just replace the driver as the overall size of the unit is perfect for where is keep it.

Levels have always been kept at a sensible level although now an then have been abused smile

Thanks for the tip for Wilmslow Audio, i'll give them a call.

For a sub, I've had a BK XLS for several years and can't fault it - excellent value for money.

Looks like the surround has just perforated.

You could buy a new driver for about £60 and be up and running again in minutes.

Best to email Paradigm and ask them for a price.

You can buy a repair kit if you can be arsed...

I seen the repair kits but looks like a faff. I'm awaiting a call back from a paradigm dealer so fingers crossed.

I've got two BK subs and I cannot recommend enough. Pick the right size and you'll never look back. Excellent value for money. Bothmof mine are downward firing. I can't every imagine overdriving one. The house would fall down first.
