In car microphone using aux input

Until it was recently lost I had an old microphone that when plugged into the aux connection of my car head unit worked as an effective on board PA system.
I've since tried another which doesn't work. It appears that to use a regular mic in this way I need a pre amp to take the level from mic to line level.
Is anyone aware of any cheap solution that would work in the car? All I can find are large mains powered amps obviously designed to work in a permanent location. It's only for amusement purposes and it's not a particularly high end system so good sound quality isn't particularly vital.
