Wiring issue, digital audio output optical to HDMI for TV.
Discussion
Hi all,
I wonder if anyone can help, just hand an extension built and had a partition wall built to mount a TV to the wall and then underneath a recessed box for the amp, virgin box etc.
I have two HDMI2 leads and a twin RCA lead poking out of a hole behind where the tv is mounted to the wall and then coming out into the back of the recessed box. This makes things very neat as this is what I want and planned.
However the TV I bought is a LG with only digital audio out so the RCA's dont work in the back of the TV which I wanted to plug into the back of the amp.
I bought a optical lead and tried to pull it through with the RCA lead which snapped, the route for the leads is very, very tight with two 90 degree bends so their is no way I can feed another cable through..
I now have only two HDMI2 leads in place and only need one from the TV to the virgin box.
Is it possible to get a convertion lead from HDMI to optical audio so I can plug my TV into a new amp that I need to buy?
Cheers.

Too late now but never, ever put cables into a wall without the ability to pull more through when you inevitably realise you should have run something else.
ALWAYS run a conduit to allow you to pull more later, or at the very least drop a couple of CAT 6 in there (doesn't even need ends on until you need it) which costs pennies and means you can always run whatever you need over it.
No help now though but might help someone else who reads it and stop them ending up with the same problem. sorry.

If you buy a decent amp (we like Denon) then you can plug everything in to the amp and just use one HDMI between the TV and the amp. If you are watching TV via the aerial in to the TV or smart apps then the audio can go down to the amplifier. This is what I do with a Samsung TV and Denon amp. I dont touch the amp at all - switch the TV on and (99% of the time!) the amp comes on automatically but I dont use any other sources than the TV.
Works a treat.

Found out my tv has a HDMI ARC = Audio Return Channel, so maybe I can use this if I buy an amp to support it, not sure what a ARC is properly so will look into it.
Read your opening post, immediately thought ARC and then read your last post and realised you'd come to the same conclusion.ARC is the way to go - audio signals from the TV fed back down the HDMI cable to the amp.
That said, what TV audio signals will you want to run back to your amp ? It'll only be channels watched direct on the TV or MPEG / AVI files on a device you have connected to the TV directly.
Thanks for the replies, going to order this and the problem is solved via HDMI ARC.

Or audio from Smart apps? Netflix? Amazon Video? Freeview TV?All the audio for my living room originates from the TV - I dont have Sky, Virgin Media etc.
+1 on ARC, this is the format designed to cut down on extra cables and should do exactly what you want.
If all else fails, a multi cutter & a slim channel down the plasterboard - or a bigger one with a conduit is an easy afternoon's worth of work. Foam Polyfiller, sanding and a paint roller will hide the damage remarkably well.

Very good advice worth sharing & spreading.ALWAYS run a conduit to allow you to pull more later, or at the very least drop a couple of CAT 6 in there (doesn't even need ends on until you need it) which costs pennies and means you can always run whatever you need over it.
