I’m planning an upgrade to my home cinema set up to ditch the 12+ year old Info us 7205 projector and replace it with something better and which can cope with 4K signals.

I will be using the system on a 5ft screen with PS4, SkyQ, and other 4K sources.

The Epson TW9300H has ‘enhanced-4k’ rather than full £3k, but I’m aware there is a new Optima model available (UHD65) which is a proper 4K machine for a similar price.

What else should I consider, and how much more do I need to spend to see a meaningful difference?!

Cheers

I don't think the Optoma's are true 4k (but they're supposed to be very good none the less).

I've also read that there is nothing different inside between the 550 and 60.

The UHD550X makes great sense at £2k (was available on Amazon for most of October for a whisker under £1500)

£3000 - £5000 at that screen size (relatively small for a projector) I'd be looking at an OLED TV.

None of the pitfalls of projecting images, work in all light conditions and true 4K.

Unless I'm missing something or you meant a 10ft screen.

Thanks, I actually meant 6ft screen and it’s not possible to have something fixed on the wall - the projector screen drops neatly in front of a map and we don’t want to permanently cover that up.

I do understand where you are coming from though!

I'd be looking at JVC at that price point.

I would say that yes the JVC are right at your price range.

I can supply several including the

DLA-X5900R 4k 60P 4:4:4 White or Black

DLA-A7900R 4k 60P 4:4:4 White or Black

both of the above are coming in under you budget, Drop me a PM if you would like some pricing. I can do a PH Discount.

If you are prepared to go to the top of that budget I would look at true 4K rather than the pseudo ones.

They are very good for those price but the brand new Sony VW260es, true 4K is in reach with a PH discount. The whole Sony range is stunning.

I even have my demo VW320es (white) from last year this I would be happy to let go just in budget.

Happy to help if they’re of interest.

So no Optima, no JVC (I assume e-shift 4K doesn’t count), so it’s a £5k minimum spend on a Sony then?

No, checked this afternoon, latest JVC’s are not native, still e-shift.

But (wrongly imho) display 4K in the top corner when displaying a generate pseudo 4K image. However what I’ve been told today (but not seen, personally) the contrast ratio and depth of black out perform everything.

It really depends on your opinion.

The JVC and the Optoma both use ’e-shift’ and ‘pixel-shift’ (respectively) to achieve 4K presentation. They both have 4K / UHD / HDMI2.2 Input’s and the sales blurb / sales rep say the JVC is the best, but then so does the Sony one.

I have installed many 1st gen E-Shift JVC’s and they are very very good, but I personally prefer my demo Sony native 4k. Which we now recommend over the JVC

Trying to get a JVC 2nd gen to do a back to back test here.

£5k is the ball park for native 4K, but if you’re interested I can see if it could be improved.

Hope that helps.

If that means the 7900 is coming in under £5k, that's a cracking deal: I just picked up a <10 hours use dealer ex-dem 7500 and it wasn't much cheaper than that (and I still felt I had a good deal, with a PX for my old X500). FWIW I'm very impressed with the X7500 so far, but it's on a 3 metre wide AT 2.40 AT screen, so I needed a bit more light output than the X500 could give.

An X7900? wow, that's a great deal (though too late for me now I've got the X7500). PM me a link of you like as I know a few people on AVforums who might be interested at that price.

It’s me. Has to be PH though. Not a fan of AVForums. Too much money to advertise and no benefit.

I make next to nothing on it but my normal trade price is just over £5k.

OK, I understand (I know how much they charge to be an AA), I don't know many AVF people who are on here though, so probably can't help much there.

It’s fine as I say it’s more helping the PH people. My business is quite busy so box shifts are easy enough.

Typically the new JVC models will have been announced by then (the reason I got my ex-demo X7500 was because the new models were coming). I forgot the name of the show, something like CEDIA, but the American forum AVS is usually buzzing by then as someone usually has some inside knowledge before the show.

I usually follow along myself, so feel free to PM me nearer the time and I'll point you in the right direction (I'm not a dealer, so nothing in it for me). Either that or hit up Chasingracecars.
