TV with recorder MIL
Discussion
85 y/o MIL will be moving to a new place in January.
TV will be wall mounted, she'll want to record stuff. (TV point and socket already in place)
a) Are there any TVs with a built in recorder
b) If not a discreet way of hooking up a box, covering up the wires will be awkward and we can't chase them into the wall.
It'll be a smart TV anyway but she's more comfortable with recordings than catch up.

The main option for this seems to be an external Hard Disk plugged into one of the usb ports, if you plan to do that check first of all that it is supported and consider getting a set with dual tuners so you can record and watch different channels.
Thanks, she's got one currently. New place would mean dangling wires down the wall, something I'd like to avoid. Wondering if any other solutions exist. Ah yes I understand, I've a panny in the spare room this will power a hard drive.
I think the disadvantage is though you wouldn't be able to watch one channel and record another.
I could wedge something like this https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/tv-and-home-entertai... suspended on a bracket maybe. If I use a Viera link I won't need the remote. I wonder how well it would work sat on it's front?
Just noticed its only 179 mm deep so may be able to rig up a shelf directly below the TV.

What I've found with my mother is when we've had to change the TV, recorder or whatever, there's been an inability to get to grips with the way the new one works as inevitably the menus, EPG etc. change.
Whatever solution you come up with, it might be a good idea to see if she can operate it before spending a lot of time installing it.
Some Smart TVs do record but you have to select the App and it's not as flexible as a dedicated recorder.

Thx yes you're right. She's used to Panasonic stuff (thank the sales people @ John Lewis) so we'll defiantly stick with that. Okay with EPG's but less confident with internet TV or i Pad. We'll sort some fibre optic internet in her new place anyway, so she wants to she can embrace the brave new age!Whatever solution you come up with, it might be a good idea to see if she can operate it before spending a lot of time installing it.
