For 5 years we've had a Samsung D8000 46", a SUPERB TV, unmatched in its day without spending stupid £.We're not massively rich at the mo, £20K of house renovations going off, we need a second TV. Victorian end terrace, front room, larger rear.

We bought an ebay 55" D8000 last month with a view that this was a more apt size for what shall be the 'living room' of the house, approx 6x5 metre, hence the 46" would be a little small.

The currently being renovated, nearly done front room, is going to be our best room, parquet floored, best furniture, best audio etc. I've been wondering, if the 55 should be in here, a very high end AV set up shall be in this room, for awesome home cinema,

The room is 3.4 (sofa to TV) by 4.3 (metres) is 55" too big?

Which size is the room again? I'm confused?

Ours is about 6x5m and a 55" feels right, a bit ostentatious but for viewing it's better than our 46" although we have a 110" projector that comes down for big events and movies.

The last sentence, 3.4 (sofa to tv) by 4.3 wide. The AV is v high end, and the TV in the room shall be used largely for films.

We have a 55 in our games/office type room, also about 3.4m from the sofa to the telly, its definitely not too big, not quite big enough so got a 65 coming.

You need to be at least 9ft / 2.7m away from screen to sofa for a 55in 1080p FULL HD TV.

Meters! What are they? wink

Anyway, after a quick google I’d say that size television would be a fine for a 14’6” x 19’6” ish room. If you don’t mind ‘big’ tellys I reckon you could go for bigger still...

...

ETA: RTFQ. For a “TV Room / Home cinema”, yeah, that size telly should be okay given proximity to the sofa.

55" is seriously chavy imho, in any size room.

Now before everyone gets all upset, because OLED only starts at 55" I have one, and it is great to look at, but it put you on the 'a bit council' thread.

Our room is 7.7 x 7.1 and it works. I put it in the sitting room the other day to try it, which is 6m x 5m and felt it was just too big. So much so decided not to have a TV in there at all and will spend the money on some new speakers instead.

TV's that dominate rooms are naff IMO.

If in doubt (and before shelling out hard-earned) cut large sheet of cardboard to size, spray with black paint & hang it on your wall for a week or so to see how you like it - cos that's more or less what it will look like most of the time!

Have the same tv in the same size room at 65” and it’s fine.

You folks are making me feel inadequatehehe

We have a 10 year old (last month!) Sony Bravia 1080p in a mighty 40", in the corner of our perfectly average 12' X 10' living room.

It's a question of adaptation really. Having lived in the same house for nearly 20 years we have gone from the Panasonic 32" boat anchor through a 37" Tosh to a 40" Samsung, a 47" LG and now a 55" LG OLED. All the same distance from the sofa. You get used to what is in the room. But this time I paced the distance then went to the shop to stand the same distance away just to make sure.

In fact, you should be no further than 2.7m away from your 55" screen to get / see the full benefit of 1080p.

That distance would be even less if you wanted the full benefit of 4K/UHD.

OP

You say it will be have a V High End Audio component, so why compromise on the Video/Visual aspect.

You dont say (or I missed it) if it will be a dedicated room or a living room with audio/tv use.

I did a media room for a client with a 104" Projector and Screen set up and he was sat about 4.5m from the screen.

The D8000 IMO has only been surpassed in picture quality in the last 18 months, but it's still a damn fine picture. I would happily go out and spend £3000 on the latest and best, but demands on our cash are elsewhere ATM.
If anything the sound element is the overkill - Tag McLaren AV, Audiolab monoblocks, Mission 752's, Kef sub. Been buying this bit by bit.

It is to be the 'best' room, so not dedicated TV room, but one where when we want to watch a film it can jump to the task.

I think when done I'll try both the 46" and the 55", I think it's a close call between them.

The room, about a week from completion now. That is the 55" in the background.

We have a 5.5 x 5.5m games/cinema room that has a 120 inch cinema screen and separate sky/blueray for big events (and Xmas in-law visits etc).

Recently, we remodelled the house, stuck a 65in 4k tele in the lounge and relegated the old 50in television to the wall behind the projector screen, to provide an alternative to always using the projector when my in-laws visit and want to watch crap.

As the tele and sofa seating are on opposite walls, 50in is a bit small to be honest.
But, that might simply be because I am used to the larger screen.

I have my 55" OLED 3m from the sofa in our TV room, it feels about right as mostly used for HD films, Netflix etc. Also guests don't go in there so they won't be able form any opinion of my social status.

The main living room which is 5x4m has a relativeky small 40" TV so that I can pretend higher social status when people visit.

This is kind of what I was thinking too. When extended the 'living room' shall be circa 3x bigger than the best room. The TV requirement in here is more day time dross for S, Corro of an evening, news etc, for that a 46" in the background somewhere isn't shabby. Then for more films, Top Gear, TGT etc I can get more enjoyment out of the 55" with the added benefit of awesome sound to boot.

We got given a 50" Panny plasma last year. Way bigger than I ever would have considered but it was free. Now I've had it for a while I wouldn't go any smaller. No such thing as too big from a decent HD source if you can live with it being in the room. go for it biggrin
