So, I am aware there are better TVs out there, but two points:

1. I want to keep it under £800.

2. I want to buy it on my Very account rather than apply for credit anywhere as I just did a balance transfer deal on a credit card and want to restrict the number of credit searches on my file.

Oh and a third!

3. Current TV, old plasma thing, is 51" so ideally this size or bigger, but under 60" as that would look ridiculous!

So, the two I have narrowed it down to are:

https://www.very.co.uk/panasonic-tx-58ex700b-58-in...

And

https://www.very.co.uk/lg-55uj750v-55-inch-4k-ultr...

They have a few nice looking Samsungs but not sure they are particularly special. I was sold on the LG a few days ago, it has Dolby Vision plus all the HDR stuff. Then I read some forum stuff with more knowledgeable folk bemoaning the blacks so now I'm not so sure?

On the other hand, will I find better for the money? I already know it will be far better than the TV it is replacing. If it makes any difference, I do play a bit of Xbox on it (will have to upgrade to the 4k version now!).

Cheers for any help.

I bought one of these (in 49" flavour) last month.

https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/tv-and-home-entertai...

The 'Super' UHD is LG's top of the range without going OLED.

The 810 is a Curry's only, the 800 is exactly the same spec (stand aside)

Here is the non Curry's version...

http://www.cramptonandmoore.co.uk/lg-55sj800v-55-s...

It's not OLED black but it's not OLED money either. Perfectly happy with my purchase. It was the Dolby Vision, connectivity and Web OS that sold it to me.

I know you're favouring Very but guarantees with Curry's, John Lewis, Richer Sounds are 5/6 years.

Under £800? Samsung 55" MU7000 all day long, but only the LG as recommended above has Dolby Vision support now.

The 49" MU7000 doesn't have the 120Hz panel so the motion is not as good as the 55".

If you're looking at the Panasonics, again I'd look at the EX750 rather than the 700, as the former has better motion. The 50" 750B is in budget.

Reconsider whether you really need Dolby Vision support? I suppose there's still a couple of years to go yet before the dust will settle on the various HDR formats.

I'm still finding my feet with this TV malarky, but there is a lot of love out there on the interwebs for the 55" MU7000. At that price point it seems to be a bit of a go-to.

We bought a 50EX700B in November, picture is pretty good but the blacks can go to pot when watching a film with lots of dark scenes.

Main issue a software update has lost the Plex option & it doesn't always see the NAS now, John Lewis have passed me onto Panasonic but I've given up with it for now.

Set looks nice, do wish we'd gone with a 55'' set (next size up in this set is 58).

The price has dropped £70 so I'm guessing the new ranges are due out soon.

I have the UH850V which I'm assuming is similar.

Very nice tv. Very slim, very little bezel, nice brushed aluminum stand, Dolby Vision is very good, 3D is a nice bonus but rarely used (avatar in 3d is amazing) and the LG OS is very smooth with rarely any issues.

I do feel its video processing side isnt great though. Its local led dimming and motion smoothing isnt as good as others (end up with artifacts and grey/white bands if not adjusted properly).

I turned both local dimming and motion smoothing off completely.

I don't know how anybody can watch tv with them on.

I ended up going for the LG and it arrives tomorrow so we'll see how I get on with it. Unfortunately I ordered before the comment about the Samsung above was posted!

my 58" panasonic plasma is exactly the same size as a 65" OLED due to the bezel. Dont rule out a TV purely on the picture size

Exactly what I ended up buying just before Christmas. I paid £800 and got a free 8500 4k Blu Ray player that I sold on eBay for £130.

One of the few purchases in my life where I have had zero buyers remorse. Yes the LG OLED looks a little bit better, but at over twice the price I didn't think it was worth it.

Amazing to think I also paid £700 for the last TV I bought in 2002, a Panasonic 32 inch CRT!

Quite happy with the TV from a picture perspective but having a slight issue where it won't work with my Denon soundbar.... It's connected to the HDMI ARC connection but no sound comes through it. Never had an issue before, it's really very strange...

You'll need to tell the LG in the sound settings to output to ARC.

Trust me, I've done all that. I work in IT Support so I'm generally pretty good with stuff like this. It makes no sense at all. It's set up to output to HDMI (ARC) and it is seeing that something is connected if I unplug and then reconnect it. It's bizarre.

Are you using the correct HDMI? At least on my LG, only HDMI 2 supports ARC.

ETA : Guess it is, since you say it's the HDMI ARC connection.

Odd.

Bought an EX750 last year and was so impressed (without going OLED) that I have just ordered another pair before the 2018 model comes out later this month and the EX 750 is discontinued. Current prices for the EX 750 are:-

65" £1500

58" £1000

50" £800

Approx half what they were 12 months ago.

Good tip, thanks. I've got my eyes on the 50" EX750. Don't need it till August but it it's going to run out might get one earlier.

I bought my old man a 50EX750 from Richer Sounds for £650.

In all honesty I am not overly impressed, good picture in many areas but blacks are poor enough to let the whole set down.
