Please could anyone advise how I can check if my DVD player will play discs with Region 1 (USA) encoding?

1. It should say in the operating manual which regions it will play.
2. If you don't have the manual, put in the exact model number into the Internet and view manual / specification as to which regions it supports.
3. Try a Region 1 DVD and see if it plays.

It’s so annoying how DVDs are region-specific grumpy

What's the name and model?

It's been a long long time since I've had to check, but many players can be made open region.

Samsung were exceptionally easy to unlock back in the day.

If you find that your player does not play Region 1 discs then simply go to Google and search "region hack XXXX" with XXXX being the make/model of your DVD player. It is most likely that the search will provide a procedure whereby pressing certain remote buttons in a certain order will remove the region restrictions.

It's a Samsung BD 6500, but unfortunately none of the hacks I've tried have worked frown

Why do manufacturers make DVD players region-specific? It's really annoying mad

Basically because they are told to, back in the day movies where released on different dates worldwide so the studios could have greater control, play247 was the place to get all your early releases from the states but nowadays with 4K & Blu-Ray the release dates are more synchronised.

If you have an Xbox One they will play regardless.
