Will American DVDs play on DVD player?
Discussion
If you find that your player does not play Region 1 discs then simply go to Google and search "region hack XXXX" with XXXX being the make/model of your DVD player. It is most likely that the search will provide a procedure whereby pressing certain remote buttons in a certain order will remove the region restrictions.

It's been a long long time since I've had to check, but many players can be made open region.
Samsung were exceptionally easy to unlock back in the day.

Why do manufacturers make DVD players region-specific? It's really annoying

Basically because they are told to, back in the day movies where released on different dates worldwide so the studios could have greater control, play247 was the place to get all your early releases from the states but nowadays with 4K & Blu-Ray the release dates are more synchronised.
