Right guys, i have a bit of a tv room layout dilema,

I initially thought i would lay out my living room like this

However i got paranoid about the reflection from the large window directly opposite, so I've then decided on this

However now im worried about the tv being so high up, so its back to my original or put a corner tv stand in.

What do you guy think is best?

Putting a TV high up over a fireplace is very poor design: sightlines should be slightly down to the screen center from your usual seated position. Buy some curtains.

Better still blinds look more natural during the day.

Option 1 and deal with the light issues with blinds/curtains.

Do you really want to drop £1.5k plus on a TV that nobody in the room faces and when they do turn to watch it they have to suffer neck strain?

I have a friend with a TV over the fireplace, it always feels very unnatural when I go over to watch anything.

Personally, I have blackout blinds from bloc blinds - similar scenario to yours with a window directly opposite the TV. Solves the problem perfectly, might be worth a look.

Thanks for your replies guys, I’ll definitely have a look at blackout blinds, just been down my friends with a tv on his wall and its one meter off the floor to the bottom of the tv, and that was the max that I think I could get away with as there was still a little above eye level when on the sofa.

I Just can’t imagine getting away with it above the fireplace now!

How do you sit when watching TV?

Many like to lie back, and the most natural position for this is around the height it will be above the fireplace.

Unless you sit bolt upright on a chair the position we all have our TVs at is actually pretty poor.

Brick up the window. Quality TV viewing is all that matters!

More seriously, I made just this change years ago in a room - I was above the fireplace, and even bought a down tilting bracket, but it was huge and looking up all the time not so comfortable. We moved to opposite a window, exactly like you propose, and it was generally fine. We have horizontal blinds that go nearly black out. There is still some reflection when it's sunny, but I mostly got used to it. I also found that the reflection was only when sitting in an exact spot, slightly to the side and it missed, and with the TV mounted slightly higher on the wall than lounge sitting height means the viewing angle is closer to reflecting the ceiling near the window.

How about using a mount which drops? Is the fireplace used?

We have vertical blinds and they are not too bad in the day but the light is in a window to the left of the TV, not opposite. Blackout if you really want to, as mentioned, but how much do you watch telly in the day? I find the OLED extremely, mly good at this when the blinds are open, though obviously when the sun comes in it is just better closed.

We also went for a dedicated TV stand from "the plasma centre" and it also houses the players and boxes and the cabling. It is also eye level and very easy to watch and the smoked glass front panels too not obstruct the remotes.

Top replies guys, yes the chimney breast will house a wood burner and mantlepiece, the movable wall mount is a good idea but not really up my street, I’m going for as slimline as possible!

Looks like a blind solution is called for
