Luddite changing the TV set up - help
Discussion
Folks,
I'm thinking about changing our TV set up - our old tv has got black lines up one side so is on its way out anyway. I've got the full sky package which I often get discounted down as is common.
But, just looking at new TVs and it seems they can do loads and connect to loads so maybe I could go for another option and do away with Sky. But - I'm struggling to follow all the options. any help appreciated.
I dont want a huge TV (current one is 32") - so I'm looking at 40" which will be plenty. just looking at this one as an example...

Its got TV Plus on it which seems like its Samsungs own streaming service so could supply films etc - is it any good?
It seems to connect to all the usual smart channels for catch up etc iplayer etc so thats good. It says Amazon Instant Video - Is that Amazon Prime? I have that and that would provide more options for programmes if so.
It can connect to NOW TV which could give me Sky channels (do I need a separate now tv stick or box?). I need to check which channels we use but at a guess its Nick for the kids plus some of the history and sky one, atlantic channels etc
What I cannot work out with NOW TV is whether the sports channels are HD or not - its extra on the SKY subs for HD but not sure about Now tv. I couldn't watch the sports channels unless they were HD, the difference is huge.
If I did all this (lose the sky boxes and switch to the various streaming services) How do I record programmes? or do I not? we record plenty of stuff on the sky boxes and often we are weeks or months behind so if we didn't record them they'd be gone from catch up.
Apologies for the many questions - I might be barking up the wrong tree but thought maybe I could consolidate somewhat and make it simpler (although probably not much cheaper I think)

You don't need to record from a streaming service. It's on demand. You watch what you want to when you want to.
Netflix is definitely worth a subscription. Just make sure you've got decent broadband so you can enjoy their 4K stuff on your shiny new TV (25Mb/s). Same goes for Amazon Prime Video.
I don't have Sky so can't really comment on that side of things.
Samsung make some great TV's. LG also worth a look.

cheers - what about catch up tv? For example, something on bbc which would only be on iplayer for a week or so. We tend to record these things at the momentNetflix is definitely worth a subscription. I presume the Samsung has a USB port which you can connect a hard drive to (my LG has). You should be able to record from Freeview Play to that.Something like this will do...
