I've had my 50" LG PX990 plasma for 7 years, I could get a lovely new 4K TV, but living in the sticks I only got 20mbps and have no 4K sources, so if I wanted to get a big 1080p TV what's the king of the hill?

Nothing, as I don't think large 1080 screens are sold anymore.

4K TV's will cope fine with a 1080p input.

Dont worry about it.

(I just had a client do exactly the same this without talking to me and ended up with the dumbest tv and only 2 HDMI inputs for the 3 HDMI sources she had, DOH!)

4k is an integer scale of 1080p so 1080p content does not get distorted to upscale to 4k.

TL:DR - Don't worry, buy a 4k set.

If you watch SD only, a new 50"+ TV will struggle to upscale. Even HD may look bad.
