4K sources, 4K tv but not 4K av amp

Moving into the world of 4K but my onkyo 809 doesn’t do 4K passtheough (least not as I understand it) but I want to fed the av amp so it does the 7.1 properly.

Should I just feed the amp with optical in or coax digital audio in ? But isn’t that not as good as getting audio over hdmi ?

Or do I need a 4K hdmi splitter to send video to the tv and audio to the amp

Of course I should just buy a new amp but don’t want to just yet.

I was faced with this a year or so ago (I even started a thread about it), very difficult to do without all of your kit being HDCP2.1 (or whatever it is called).

I bought a new amp !
