Vinyl player for an amateur
Discussion
The wife has been given a load of her parents vinyl due to them downsizing and I'd like to buy her a vinyl player for Christmas but just wondering if anyone has anything that's got a built in speaker or can connect to a sonos speaker I could look at. Not looking at a whole hifi system just a player with a speaker / Bluetooth capability. Cheers
If you hope to enjoy the records you will need to actually go a little bit further I think. There are loads of secondhand record decks and you could connect into a Bluetooth speaker if you get a pre amp but it will sound very poor.
Did the wife's parents have a system? You should acquire that with the LPs. If they are good quality records in good condition they could be rare or valuable and it would be a shame to wreck them with a cheap and nasty supermarket record player like a crossley.

You need a budget. I really wouldn’t bother unless you’re willing to spend decent money. There’s no point spending £200, listening to a few records once, then not bothering. There’s nothing magical about vinyl or record players until they’ve hoovered up at least a few hundred of your quids. To include amp and speakers..... even used you’re looking at three or four hundred for anything worth the hassle.

Thanks guys, I think the budget would be like max £400 which i know isn't a massive one but it's just a side project for us.
As for parents vinyl player, they've had the vinyl for years but no player or speakers so we were just handed quite a bit of vinyl from them.
What have you already got? Apologies if you have already said, but the vinyl deserves the very best player you can afford. As for parents vinyl player, they've had the vinyl for years but no player or speakers so we were just handed quite a bit of vinyl from them.
I'd be looking to spend £100 on the amp and speakers and £300 on the record player - something along the lines of a Rega P or Planar - which you'd get your money back on if it isn't for you. Amp and speakers can be found for reasonable prices and can be upgraded later if you start to enjoy yourself. Don't forget to find an amp with an integrated phono stage (MM or Moving Magnet) to maximise your budget.

People do struggle with what to call one of those things....I still call it a record player and LPs but I have singles too so it's difficult to decide what to call the media when you are just coming into the game.[ur]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXDK3x5lAYI[/url]
NEVER VINYLS THOUGH.

We have nothing at the minute apart from some Vinyl. The Deck seems nice but I was wondering if you can get any table top speakers & amp to use as we we have a cupboard in our lounge with an empty top that we were thinking of putting a player & speakers if needed as we're limited on space. What amp should I start to look at?
Amps:
My system is powered by a (recently rebuilt and cleaned) NAD 3020, there are many many choices. Speakers are Mordaunt Short and turntable is a classic Dual (forgot the type number)
The stylus (if rubbish/old), is the part that is most important as it governs quality pick up and the amount of damage it causes, if unknown get a new one.
I am no expert regarding what to get:

In HiFi circles a record player is a turntable - I think what differentiates the two is that traditionally a record player was an all in one device like this:
Record player: (amplifier and speaker built in)
Turntable: (requires ancillaries such as an amplifier and speakers.)
And of course the media is known as records, but LP (Long Player) for 12" long playing records, and single (7" but confusingly also available in 12").
Single was a throwback from the days when a single was just that - one song per side - but of course in later years, it wasn't uncommon to have LPs with a single track per side.
And then of course there are EPs (Extended play singles) which were a single with generally two tracks per side.
Here endeth the lesson!!!

On a budget of £400 get yourself down to the likes of Richer Sounds and buy yourself an Audio Technica LP3 turntable for about £150 and then spend the rest on an amp and speakers of your choice / their recommendation.
Absolutely this. Have a look at the 'Project Primary E' turntable too. Phone ahead, they'll set it all up for you so can go in and have a listen with a couple of your own records.

Speak to Paul Hobson at Moorgate Acoustics and see what cheapest used budget system he could put together for you. They do plenty by mail order and he is my go-to person for HiFi queries and supplier. Good condition used turntable, amp, speakers and speaker cable and off you go. 0114 2756048

That's great, you'll be amazed at how that vinyl sounds through a proper hi fi, even if it's comprised of used components just to get you going. It's also theraputic!
