I currently stream all of my MKV files (hosted on my LAN on a NAS - shared SMB) through either: (Everything goes through my Denon AVR)

WDTV Live - streams lovely and smooth, but not X265 (264 is fine), and max 1080p. Passes all audio formats (via HDMI) to the amp untouched.Behaves wonderfully with audio .

Amazon Fire TV (with Ethernet adapter) - Via Kodi - streams 4K HDR, BUT, always downscales the audio to DD Surround. This is an Amazon Fire limitation that Kodi acknowledges. Also, audio sync can need adjusting from movie to movie.

Now, I want to stream all my MKVs - 4K HDR10 to my TV through my amp with all the audio formats untouched - so I get True HD, DTS, DTS Master, etc.

Does the Nvidia Shield fit the bill? Do I have to install Kodi on it, or is there a native app? (I find Kodi a bit of a mess).

I think it's the all-in-one box for me, but I need help! :-)

Plex running on the Shield will do it, and well. The Shield does h.264/5 natively I think, for transcoding, or if everything supports it should pass straight through.

It’s a decent media manager with mobile support too, offline sync as a payable option (£3/month)

I’ve been using it for a few years now, SMB shares on a freenas server, the Shield running Plex, and streaming to Chromecast over WiFi. Works well

For closure, I bought the Sheild. Lovely bit of kit.

Streaming my movies with Plex, and watching Amazon Prime 4k with it. Get very minor audio "hiccups" at the start of Prime 4k shows but settles down.

Best bit is it totally integrates with Marmony hub so my remote can completely control Plex, Amazon etc.

Very pleased with the overall solution.

Bye bye to WDTV Live and Amazon Fire TV.
