Why does my TV have awful bright colour definition?
Discussion
Hello, never been in this section before, not particularly into TVs and find their spec a bit confusing, hoping for some advice.
Background:
Recently bought a Nintendo 64 for nostalgia and some casual gaming.
Diddy kong racing (a bit like Mario kart) is a real strain to play on our downstairs TV, brighter colours are washed out, and it's all bright primary colours. The little yellow mouse is invisible against the sand.
No amount of twidling with settings helps. Dynamic contrast ratio makes no odds.
Upstair on the TV/computer monitor it looks much better, but that's mine for the computer.
Downstairs TV: Samsung LE32A457C1DXXU
Upstairs TV: Toshiba 32BV502B
Both are old low/mid range 32" LCDs, nothing fancy.
Why are bright colours so awful on the Samsung?
Googling around the Samsung is probably 10,000:1 static contrast ratio and the Toshiba is 100,000:1 but hard to find and that might be dynamic? But contrast ratio is very hard to find and as I understand a bit of a fiddle anyway, so hard to compare.
Thought about buying a new one, this being a good price and me having a voucher for John Lewis, but is the contrast ratio much lower than my ancient little 32" Toshiba? How do I avoid buying a TV that's no good to me?
