Stereo pair with a Sonos:5 - Can I use Sonos:1?
Discussion
I have a Sonos 5 in my kitchen that on low volume sounds quite directional - I think it could do with a speaker on the other side of the room to create a fuller sound - I don't really want another 5 in the room as it's a little large, so would a Sonos:1 or pair of 1's be okay to pair with it, or would that not really work as they are completely different to the 5?
Have googled for an answer but nothing seems to answer this question specifically...don't want to waste my money buying a Sonos:1 if it's not going to do the job I want it to do

A pair of 1's is a great sound. They are much better than a 3 or a 5 at lower volumes. If you are mainly low volume I'd sell the 5 and buy a pair of 1's. You could even get one of them with Alexa as wellHave googled for an answer but nothing seems to answer this question specifically...don't want to waste my money buying a Sonos:1 if it's not going to do the job I want it to do

No you can't pair a 5 with a 1. They need to be matching speakers as far as I know.Have googled for an answer but nothing seems to answer this question specifically...don't want to waste my money buying a Sonos:1 if it's not going to do the job I want it to do

Want to keep the 5 if I can, I do use it at volume, and I like the level of bass I get from it in the absence of having a sub (couldn't quite get the wife to agree to having a sub in the kitchen aswell!) - As it's right next to the bi-folds then it will also provide a decent sound in the garden in the summer. Just wondering if pairing it with a 1 (or 2 of them) will fill that emptiness at the back of the roomYou can pair non matching Sonos speakers as a stereo pair , but you need an app called Sonos sequencer to do it (IOS only) I can’t be 100% sure it will work for a 1 and a 5, but it would be weird as it would be well out of balance .
Which way up is the 5 ? It upright they are more directional then horizontal, it switches some tweeters off inside. Horizontal (landscape) for a wider sound stage

With a non-Sonos app, no idea. But having 3s and 5s I reckon they would sound odd paired.

Thanks for the comments all, you confirmed pretty much what I expected - maybe I’ll get a pair of 1’s and then put the 5 somewhere else, cheers
I have a pair of 1's in the lounge, pair of 3's in the dining room, a single 1 in hallway (its a long wide hall) a 5 in the kitchen and a 1 in the bedroom.I used to have the 3's in the lounge, but at lower volume (chill listening etc) the 1's are miles better. I swapped them around and the improvement was instant.
As I said above, sell the 5 and get a pair of 1's, or repurpose the 5 somewhere else and invest in the 1's .. get 1 with Alexa if that suits as well (I did have an Alexa 1 when they 1st came out but after a few days of asking Alexa if she works for the CIA I got bored and sent it back)
I don't know about that (the 3s being the runts). Admittedly I don't have 1s and 3s or 1s and 5s in the same place at the same time for a back to back comparison, but my reaction to the 1s when I first got them was "Wow. Loud". But over time it has become "Wow. They've really overdone the bass in these". I think the 5s and the 3s are better balanced.
