Quick question...

I have Sky+HD, and have just ordered an upgrade to SkyQ with a 2TB box.

We’ve just finished having the living room decorated, and the Sky cables to the TV corner go neatly under the flooring, which cannot now be lifted without wrecking the skirting.

Will the installer be able to re-use this cabling for SkyQ?

I am also considering asking for the (new?) dish to be installed on another corner of the house. Will the installer be able to splice into the old cable where it goes through the wall?

Obviously I’ll be asking these questions on installation day, but I’d like to know the answers first. wink

Thanks!

Yes they can use the old cables, i was in the same boat - new extension, cables run through floor void and wall cavities.

They replaced the dish for an up-to-date version.

They should be able to extend the cables you have, there is a slim chance that the signal may be degraded though. Again, i did this to my setup during the building works and it was fine - its only co-ax at the end of the day

Sky will only install the easiest way. So will use the existing cable and swap the LNB on the dish. Likely will keep the same dome and bracket. Almost certainly will not move it.

If you want it moved pay a local satellite tv installer about £60 and he will do exactly what you require if possible.

Awesome! Thanks.

So I’ll ask if he’ll move it, otherwise the dish will have to stay put. It gets overgrown by Wisteria so would be nice to move it.

Excellent news that the existing cabling will suffice.

This all came from me phoning to report duff signal (the LNB is very loose), and the call snowballed into an order for SkyQ. I can see it escalating further now - we’ll be “needing” a 4K telly. I wonder if I can tell Mrs Oxgreen that it won’t work with our existing telly...

Pretty much the same situation as me, faulty LNB, telephone call to Sky and ended up on a new contract with Sky Q that was about £30 a month cheaper, bit of a no-brainer.

The Q remote is bloody awful, the original remote was a genius design.

Similar story here, rang up to say moving house, girl asked if she could check I was on best deal..... she came back asking if I wanted Sky Q & it would be 30 quid less. Not much of a decision to make with that!

If I hold the LNB in just the right position I can get an excellent signal. But my arm starts to ache after a couple of hours.

I’m hoping my Logitech Harmony 1 will be able to emulate it and I can store it away.

Sorry, yes, when it understands what you want it’s a great feature.

But the buttons and menu’s are clumsy imo.

You can get a Sky Q remote that is similar to the traditional Sky remote. I have one.

The Sky installer has arrived, and confirms that he’ll be splicing into the existing cable. He’s also happy to install the new dish in a better location. Result!

Edited to add: He’s done a nice neat job of running the cable from the new dish in its new location to the existing hole in the wall, then a neat job of splicing into the existing cable just inside the house. He was unable to remove the wall bracket for the old dish because the Wisteria has entwined itself through it - but it’ll disappear soon enough as the Wisteria is pretty vigorous. No more having to get up on a step ladder in the pouring rain to clear its branches from the dish’s line of sight!
