Okay, so we've been in the Penthouse for a little while now, (the build thread is over in Homes, Gardens and DIY), the final details to finish it completely are all coming together and sorting out the TV and Hi Fi is next on the list.

We have a 48" Samsung at the moment but have decided that a 65" screen is definitely what we need in the living room and all advice and my research have so far lead me to Sony as the best but as I'm not a technophobe I'm still open minded.

I have someone from Richer Sounds coming round next week to assess our needs regarding the sound system but I would like to get a bit further with the TV choice before that so that I can talk to him with some degree of knowledge.

The specific Sony Bravia models I've been looking at are the KD65 AG8BU at £2,999, the KD65 AF9BU at £2,999 and the KD65 AG9BU at £3,599, the specs all seem very similar so I'm trying to justify the extra £600 for the last one.

Please advise me on whether Sony is the right choice or what alternatives I should consider and why.

(LG make all the OLED panels at the moment and sell them on, processing is company specific.)

Hope you do not mind me jumping in.

Both the Panasonic and LG review well. I see though the Panasonic’s max size is 65” Our viewing distance is a little over 4.5m and would prefer 72-80”. Our living room area is 8M square. The sets sound is irrelevant as the Hi Fi -and processor etc takes care of that.

Am I correct in that new models get released in September?

I've been monitoring the LG "Wallpaper" tv prices for a while - promised myself one when they dropped below £3k for a 65"

Nearly there - https://www.amazon.co.uk/LG-OLED65W8PLA-65-Signatu...

thinner than a £1 coin :-)

I happened to look at that review yesterday and the model number the OP mentioned is in it is why I posted it, in case it was of some use. Coincidence.

What you intend to watch is important and what it will be connected to and how. And how you intend to get it, disk player, streaming etc. 4k or 1080p sources. That said an OLED is just sublime picture quality in either of those formats.

Not sure of the new model releases dates but sure a quick search will show it up (march april?).

Someone with better knowledge can pick up on the big rooms and big screens. My room is 4X6 and I am around 7' away from a 55 OLED (should have got 65). Mixing metric and imperial there for some reason.

Viewing distance wise. There are charts but people get anal over them, some swear by them to the mm. I used them as a guide when I got mine and re arranged the living room, the eye/brain combination is particular to each person. Best thing you can do is go look at them, stand the distance back from the display and see what you think. Though I don't take much note of the guide close to the zone (other than guide) and rely on my eyes, you are getting a bit far away and firmly in 1080p territory.

Saying that I have seen 4k on a several small panel from a distance the guides say I should have no benefit and it looked good. There is an interesting paper doing the rounds from some optician suggesting that the brain works well on detail and fills in the gaps. That is not pixel counting with the eye, it is looking at what the pixels are showing, field of grass for example, you see it better 4k than HD even at a distance. But he was involved with 8k and had some irons in that fire.

I recently bought a Sony 55" AF9. It's a fantastic set.

Biggest differences between the AF and AG are the stand and the remote. I was putting mine on a desktop stand anyway so the former wasn't an issue. The latter is cosmetic really so not an issue either. The lower number ones (AF8 etc) are lower spec versions of the same thing.

From all the research I did the two best OLEDs if budget isn't tight are the Sony and the LG (C or E series?). A big selling point for me was the Android TV OS on the Sony. basically means no need for a second box for me to run Kodi etc on. It works really nicely.

Another big plus is that I use the TV's speaker (the whole screen!) as a centre speaker, which means I can have the TV seated lower.

Picture quality is superb and getting better with use. Set looks great.

There are a couple of minor irritants with the TV guides (YouView and Freeview - both flawed in different ways so no perfect solution). But generally it works well.

A mate of mine bought an AF9 recently and it's absolutely stunning. Major envy, but I can't justify changing my KD-55XE9305 yet...

LG, Panasonic and Sony all offer brilliant OLED pictures, with very little to separate them!
I think the Pana has the best processing and least annoying operating system.

I hate the Sony to use. So irritating, but still a good TV.

I’m sure you’ll be happy with any of them smile

Take great care with Richersounds! They are massively incentivised to sell some pretty poor brands.
If I was you, if this is something you want to be proud of and use a lot, I’d be posting their recommendations here for a 2nd opinion.
I work with an ex Richer emplyeee and their sales practices are often deplorable!

If you know what you want, go there and grab a bargain, but it would be my last suggestion of somewhere to go for impartial advice.

See how you get on anyway.
