One of those where to start questions. I have quite a collection of vinyl but no current setup to listen to it on. I do have my original Revolver turntable with Linn Basik arm which i believe was good in it's day. Question is do i keep that and get amp/speakers or just replace the lot?

I know you’ve heard this advice a thousand times before but If possible stick the Revolver in the car and call in to a decent hifi shop.

Ask them to give the deck a five minute checkover to make sure it’s AOK and then demo it against the usual suspect - Rega or whatever has caught your eye.

If you hear a big improvement buy the Rega / other. If not, stick with the Revolver and, if (almost certainly) needed, get the dealer to fit a new pick up cartridge.

Then check out the dealer’s amp and speaker recommendations.

If you don’t have a favoured dealer let me know your nearest town or city - I can give you some nearest recommendations.

Thanks, that is good advice. Definitely will need a new cartridge so will make a trip shortly. I'm near Bournemouth if you have any recommendations.

Hi

Rega dealers are a bit thin on the ground in your part of the world

Nearest are

Winchester Hi-Fi (Andy)
The Old Georgian, 29 Jewry Street, Winchester, Hampshire
Tel: 01962 859859

Audience (Andrew)
12 Broad Street, Bath
Tel: 01225 333310

There are other dealers nearer - Stone Audio and Jordan Acoustics for instance - but I can’t see anything on their websites that tick the right boxes turntable-wise unless you want a like-for-like swap or have lottery money to spend in which case you can’t go too far wrong with a Linn Sondek....

I’m deliberately steering you towards independent specialist but you may get what you need from the nearby chains - Sevenoaks or Audio T - but I don’t know the shops as well.

Either of the Rega dealers would make it a fun day out. Call one of them first before travelling, have a chat - they won’t patronise you or dismiss any thoughts you have. Tell them Alan ex-Linn recommended them.

Have fun.
