I fancy a new speaker in the kitchen, I’ve got a £40 one I bought a few years ago and its done the job, and is surprisingly loud and ‘bassy’ for the size, but the sound quality isn’t really up there.

My priority is sound quality and compactness, something that doesn’t take much space on a bench (tall is fine). Some smart features would be nice to have. Budget £200 max.

Any recommendations?

If you can stretch another £20 and it fits in your allocated space I'd get this without a seconds hesitation.

If that's too large or an little expensive then you could get its smaller brother:

We have various music cast devices about the house and love them. Heard of people also switching over to musiccast from Sonos.

Cheers. I think sadly the first one will be too big, but it looks like the second one would fit, so I'll check it out

I have a B&O S3 which I think may no longer be available. But, when they were they were sold at a discount.

I know B&O are rarely recommended around these parts but the sound out of these caused me to recalibrate my hifi. Also, I actually have 2 as they pair up so I can have excellent music in one room or two. Or, inside and outside.

Anyone moving from Sonos to this https://uk.yamaha.com/en/products/audio_visual/des... is set to be very disappointed. It is almost un-listenable compared with the Play1.

I don’t know much about hi fi, but I’ve got a couple of these

And am really quite pleased with them. Styling not to everyone’s taste I guess, but I preferred them to all the sculpted cylinders out there. They do bigger and smaller ones too.

Apple HomePod sounds incredible, but only any good if you’re a dedicated Apple user.

For your kitchen? I got a JBL Link View for my garage which has reasonably good sound for something relatively small, it has a screen so you can have it display stuff. It's a chromecast speaker and it also has bluetooth.

Bluesound Pulse Flex. Have a look for an open box clearance one from somewhere like Sevenoaks.

Have a look at the Oluv's gadgets YT channel. He does a lot of in depth reviews of BT speakers:

6 months later and I finally bought something laugh a Google Nest Audio speaker in the black Friday sale. Stunning piece of equipment for the money which sounds WAY better than it has any right to for 70 quid. I can wholeheartedly recommend and I am pretty fussy about my audio, it sounds like I have a hifi in my kitchen and the bass is surprisingly good as is the clarity.

To be honest I think there's a lot of stuff out there which sounds good for the money. Even our echoes are pretty good.
