EE tv to Apple TV 4K
Discussion
Probably a simple question but as I don’t have a TV and the rest that goes with it hopefully someone can help.
Parents have a Panasonic Plasma c12yrs old and EE broadband, with this deal they have an EE tv box which has a coaxial connection for free view and then provides recording and some web based facilities.
They have been told by EE that the box is being discontinued yes and the plan is to switch to Apple TV 4K now I’m no genius but in thinking there won’t be free view on said box unless it’s streamed via an app? Surely if so they’re gonna use a lot of bandwidth as this is pretty much all they watch. So I presume they will need a new TV with free view built in and if so would Apple TV be able to record from that? Im beginning to think this will be wasted on them and there’s no point paying for it.

With the Apple TV there are all the common streaming options BBC, ITV, C4 and C5. You can also subscribe to TVPlayer and NowTV with in the platform which will give you other live channels.
Alternatively you could use an Apple TV for streaming and a seperate Freeveiw HD Box for live channel selection and viewing.

Does the existing TV have a digital terrestrial tuner? Do they want what Apple TV is really good at, that is payed for streamed films and TV shows? Is EE giving the Apple TV as part of the package? HD Apple TV is £149 one off payment (includes Apple TV channel for one year), are EE bundling this in some way?
TV will need a HDMI input and HDCP protocol on it for Apple to work I think (anyone?). That last bit is copyright, worth checking. Apple doesn't record (for simplicity here).
If all they want is terrestrial TV then use the TV built in tuner or a paid for Humax etc. Other makers also sell a basic aerial fed TV box with recording and decent menu and only need to connect to the aerial, then connect to the TV. Probably same cost as the Apple HD TV cost.
But yep, Apple TV, streaming only, all the streaming apps for the UK commercial channels (and more) but the ads with the UK commercial channels make them a pain to use, you have to sit through more than the terrestrial channel and cannot fast forward them, and the BBC iPlayer app works fine but finding stuff is not the best. For simplicity I use the Apple TV all the time for BBC catchup and try to record the commercial channels on my separate recorder.
