Given that WFH doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon, I think it’s time to get some better audio for my spare bedroom/office. Currently just listening to music via my phone‘s speakers, but obviously sound quality there is bad.

For £200 or less, what would be a good free-standing speaker that you can stream music etc to from your phone or tablet I don’t need additional smart home integration over and above that.

Thanks

OK lots of different options out there.

But there are two that could be a little different to the norm.

Klipsch, Heritage Groove - Great little rechargeable bluetooth and line-in speaker with the added bonus of a mic - so you can use it as a conference call box as well.

SoundCast VG3, which can be got within budget if you know where to look or who to ask, Rechargeable again, bluetooth, portable, USB Charge Pack (output) and waterproof, so on summer days you can work out in the garden ro by the pool! without a worry.

Hope that helps, happy answer q's

Have a look at Oluv's Gadgets:

He reviews hundreds of different speakers.

For what you want, will a Bose Soundlink mini not do you? Cheaper than £200 and despite being Bose, they actually sound pretty good. They pack plenty of punch to fill a small area. Portable too so you can take it with you if you're in the garden or wherever. It's just a bluetooth speaker so no home wi-fi integration needed. I love my hi-fi and have a half decent setup in my family room but I have one as a travel speaker. I also use it as my bedroom option for lazy weekend mornings when I want to pop some tunes on. Much better than using the phone speakers.

I bought a bluetooth dongle thing that plugs into spare phono inputs on my amp. I therefore get music through my hifi, ie good "NAD" amp and excellent hifi speakers for £30

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bluetooth-Adapter-Streami...

Or these are very good

Tribit Xsound go. Waterproof, great sound etc. Mine was bough for me by BlueG junior who is an accoustic engineer and has designed speakers etc. Way cheaper than £200

I'm generally not a "Bose Tax" fan either, but this little thing does pack a punch. Love mine.

If you haven’t committed yet have a look at Audio Pro. I got this one for about £100 when it was Bluetooth only. Beautifully made. Great sound.

The new BT5 in driftwood looks lovely. Trying to justify one!

We have a JBL extreme. Sound quality is fantastic (Better than our home Sonos system in a blind hearing test by us). Handy for charging phones etc off whilst in use (acts as a power bank in effect).

Oh and when zipped up (small waterproof zip for access to charge point and USB sockets)

https://uk.jbl.com/bluetooth-speakers/JBL+Xtreme+2...

Can’t rate it highly enough. We use it out on our balcony all the time. It’s been left out in the rain and all sorts.

I picked up a "Nobsound" (yeah, really) bluetooth amplifier from Amazon for around £30 recently. It gives a much better sound than my previous cheap bluetooth speaker. Its tiny, fits in the palm of your hand. I strap it to the back of one of the speaker stands. Just plug in your old hi fi speakers and connect via Bluetooth.

You don't need to pay for a rechargeable battery device as its stationary. You don't need to pay for any other "smart" functions.
