5.1/7.1 Speaker recommendations
Discussion
I've had a Sony blu ray all in one surround sound system for years. I was ok but the sound was s
t and it wasnt flexible.
I've upgraded to a new Yamaha amp and I would like to get new speakers. So two questions, what do people recommend. The lounge isnt huge and my wife wont tolerate massive units. Thinking some thing like the cambridge audio or monitor system with the small Bose like speakers. Any recommendations?
Also the new amp supports 7.1. Is that worth the extra effort and hassle or should I just stick with 5.1?

SVS do a really nice 5.1 set up with their Prime Satalite set https://www.svsound.com/products/prime-satellite-5...
I have the Satalites as rear surrounds and 4 Prime Elevations for Atmos. They're a really nice speaker and quite small. I used to have them mounted on the wall with the SVS soundpath brackets, but have since moved them to stands.

Thanks all, should have specified my budget. Those SvS and Gallo speakers look great but a bit out of budget. I'm looking more around d the 500-700 mark. Considering these

5 stars in What HiFi. The also do ceiling speakers. Wonder if they might work for the additional 2 in a 7.1 set up. Then again I donkey know where I am getting a 7.1 source from. I have normal Sky HD and Netflix and Prime via a Fire stick

Does your amp support Atmos/DTS-X/Auro 3d? Maybe look at 5.1.2 as that would be better than 7.1 for involvement.
No it doesnt. Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD onlyETA - Im not even sure right now whether I will get a 7.1 source anyway. I dont have 4K tv, so only have 1080 Sky and Amazon Fire

I know its easy for others to say as everyone's budgets are different (mine is non existent lol) but it's worth waiting and saving for a bit. All the new 8k receivers from Denon and Marantz have just come out, so the older models should see a drop in price. I got my Marantz 7013 for NZ$2K down from 5k. And depending how patient you are you could start with just a set of LCR speakers. ETA - Im not even sure right now whether I will get a 7.1 source anyway. I bought my my old 5.1 receiver for about $400 on sale 11 years ago, waited 6 months for a speaker sale and got my Wharfedale Diamond 10s on sale. Then added a Diamond 10 centre in the next sale. Then a Yamaha sub after a year or 2 and cheap in ceiling for rear surrounds. And that did for about 6 years.
The 2 years ago got the SVS primes for rears and this year added the Elevations.
I only managed to upgrade my amp due to an inheritance though, otherwise I'd still be dreaming of Atmos.
I'm just waiting now for my Father in law to realise he doesn't use his Hifi and sell me his Diamond 10.6 Towers and I'll move the bookshelfs to rears and sell the Prime Satalites.
The good thing with home audio is it doesn't have to be rushed, just a little at a time.
As for 4k content, most streaming sites have it and TCL tvs are great for the cost.
