Our almost decade 42" Panasonic Plasma is on its way out, speakers are buzzing, so time to get shut. I don't have a mega budget, absolute max £500. I think ideally a bigger screen would be better as we're sat 3m-ish away, so looking at going up to 50". No gaming but lots of Netflix movies and box sets and Blu Rays. I like to look of the Philips Android tv at this price, https://www.richersounds.com/tv-projectors/all-tvs...

Is that any good? What would you recommend?

At £320 that JVC seems almost too good to be true, but reviews look good too. https://www.techadvisor.co.uk/review/jvc-fire-tv-e...

So that begs the question, if I spent say another £150 would I get something appreciably better?

Just last night I was looking back through the threads in here for a 50” job.
This was recommended LG 50UN73006LA.
It seems to be okay for my needs but it may not have what you need in a tele.
To my surprise Argos was the cheapest! Circa £400.
As I could do with a new set soon, I would appreciate any up to date views on it so I don’t buy a minger!

We also had a 42" Panasonic plasma, about 10yo.

No need to replace it but wanted a cheap TV for the summer house.

Ended up finding a 10yo 50" Panasonic plasma locally on eBay for £80.

Gave us the 42" for the summer house and the same as what we had but bigger in the lounge. Perfectly happy with both.

(No smart functions, but we don't have Netflix, and blu rays play through the Xbox, TiVo gives us some on-demand stuff).

If it was a reasonable cost, I'd rather buy just a screen rather than full blown TV. I've got a roku box which is better than my TVs built in apps and decent AV so no need for sound.

Appreciate I'm in the minority though!

What are these cheap label TVs like in terms of picture and sound quality? I understand the likes of Sharp and JVC are no longer the brands they were in that they are now just a badge applied TVs made by third parties. Mentally I’m predisposed to buying from a “proper” brand, but maybe that’s the wrong view to have. Picture quality is important to me within the constraints of the budget.

Hisense do seem to get some good feedback, but never heard of them until last week.

Not to fussed about smart features as I use a Chromecast, although Android TV might interest me, hence the Philips set linked in the first post.

I probably replied to the last thread on this subject but we bought a 49" LG two months ago to replace our 10 yr old 37" Panasonic.

Richer Sounds 49SM8050PLC £469 del. with 6 yr warranty. Does everything we need and more.

Note - we changed the OEM stand which was only two pieces of lightweight plastic with something far more heavy duty from Ebay - £26.

I bought a Hisense BUK50 Uled for 400 and I'm very happy with it.
Nice and thin too, great picture, surprisingly good sound and only a 1mm bezel at the top and sides.
