Oled TV -Sky Multiroom
Discussion
Hi All
As part of a house renovation I was looking to put a new TV in the kitchen diner. Originally I was looking to mount a 48" OLED but given it's going to be hooked up to a Sky Multiroom box (which is only 1080p), am I right in thinking I won't get any benefits in terms of picture quality?
Thanks

I suppose it’ll depend on how much tv you watch in the kitchen diner! If you watch lots, and can easily afford a 48” OLED then go for it. It’ll upscale nicely and will take any upgrades to the source material well. Just watch for screen burn if it’s on the same channel most of the time.

If the budget allows, I would always go with OLED over LED - blacks are blacker, whites are whiter. The contrast between the two can be stark.
And don't forget the UHD content you can get from Sky (Q), not to mention 4k from the likes of Netflix & Prime.
In a bright kitchen where Sky news might be left on all day an OLED is definately the wrong choice. And don't forget the UHD content you can get from Sky (Q), not to mention 4k from the likes of Netflix & Prime.
The only feature of your telly that you will not be able to enjoy by using a satellite box is Sky UHD. However the difference in PQ between HD and UHD at that screen size is slight enough that a casual observer won’t be able to easily tell the difference. Additionally, there is still very little content in UHD from Sky. For me it’s basically PL football and the F1 (though the latter does look immense on a 77” OLED
).
You will otherwise get the benefits of an OLED telly vs LED/LCD i.e. better light manipulation, contrast and depth of black. As pointed out above if you use the apps built in to WebOS rather than the Sky box, you would still be able to get UHD content via Netflix, Prime etc. Personally, assuming money is not the limiting factor I would buy OLED for any application other than as a gaming monitor or use in a conservatory or similarly bright, undimmable environment.

Most of the new movies are UHD.Edited by DeWar on Saturday 26th September 10:57
