We are moving to New Zealand and have to do 14 days quarantine in a hotel room on arrival. I’ve got about 400hrs of stuff I’ve not watched on our box so rather than try and get through it before we go I thought about taking the box and card in my luggage to watch on arrival.

Obviously no sky satellite over there due to being Southern Hemisphere but will the recorded programs play back when powered up with a card in and not connected to the internet?, or does it shut down if no lnb signal received within 24hrs or such?.

If you have sky Q you could watch on Sky Go if you run a VPN

Sky HD ? Yeah that won’t work it’s not a video recorder. You turn of your sky subscription in the UK you can’t watch your recorded programs.

It’s a old sky +HD box. I’m happy to keep the subscription going so the card is live but not sure on how the box works with regards to security features on startup. I know you can take the box to another address in uk and it will work and the same in Europe but not sure on Southern Hemisphere with no satellite signal. Does the box need a signal before it will start???.

I only want to watch the programs that I’ve recorded onto the box, after quarantine I know it won’t work and will cancel subscription and throw the box away.

Not sure if a broadband connection, with vpn, would work.

My mum lives in Spain and sky no longer works there even, the satellite signal has been diminished to only cover the U.K. She can get tele through the internet via vpn.

Sky Go on yer iPad via vpn as an alternative?

Ok thanks, I might try grabbing hold of a sky engineer when I next see one out and about see if they will divulge the secrets of how a sky box works. laugh

Sky go via VPN is ok for live tv but I want to watch all the programs I got recorded on the hardrive, some go back years. I’m literally thinking of the 14 days stuck in a hotel room and how boring it’s going to be!.

I doubt an old Sky box has GPS in it, so it won't know if it is in the UK or NZ. Before you go you could just unplug it from the internet and the satellite dish and see if it works at home. If it does it's probably worth taking to NZ. Don't forget to buy the appropriate mains power adaptor and take a selection of cables to connect to a TV.

Firestick and a uk iptv sub, ( presumed that you have a decent internet service in NZ)

You won't have the programs you recorded on your sky box but all the uk Tv you could ever need and more.

Amazon sale is almost on us so firestick around £20 and a 12months sub around £60 shorter subs are available.
