Hi guys,

I quiet fancy some new speakers now that I have a decent space of my own and making 'noise' isn't a huge issue.

I've been looking at some powered speakers to sit on my desk and and will primarily run through my Mac computer, having said that I may connect a turntable to them at some point but lets see.

Does anyone have any recommendations for speakers budget max £400-£500ish.

I;m thinking of the following:

Klipsch R-51PM Bookshelf Speakers
premiumsound.co.uk .. XSZiSUFfVc_cAUUcUaAn8zEALw_wcB

These sixes look and spec up amazing but are way over budget

https://www.amazon.co.uk/o/ASIN/B075JMBWVQ/ref=nos...

I know nothing about this brand btw.

Edifier R1700BT
https://www.amazon.co.uk/o/ASIN/B07D4H8F8F/ref=nos...

Yamaha HS8 Active Studio
https://www.pmtonline.co.uk/yamaha-hs8-active-stud...

These Yamaha's seem awesome but abit overkill for what I need.

I listen to allot of

Reggae mainly old school and some modern (mainly vinyls)
Old school hip hop
Bhangra and some Indian music mostly modern

So I need deep bass without a muffled and flat top end and decent mids.

Music is usually played through my Mac whist I work via Spotify, soundcloud, you tube music etc or vinyls.

Currently I use the Harmon Kardon soundsticks whch sound pretty good but I need something meatier I think, oh and with Bluetooth connectivity

Sorry for the long post, some advice would be great.

thanks

I think it would be good to add a pair of these to the shortlist to try and hear. I should add that I've not heard these because I've not been in the market for this type of product. I used to be involved in the speaker manufacturing industry for and designed a few active and passive commercial designs. I'm always curious about what the market is up to and what the 'hot' products are. https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/adam-t7v

From the many reviews I've seen, the Adam T7V has a great reputation but..........it doesn't have built in bluetooth so you'll need an adapter too; something like one of these. 5 year warranty on the Adam gear is a bonus too. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Logitech-Bluetooth-Receiv...

If you want bass to go a little deeper with higher max volume capability; and the budget can make it just past £500 then there is the newer top model in their T range, the T8V. The reviewer compares them favourably to his £2500 a pair of Event Opal monitors. https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/adam-audio-t8...

Remember, you would need 2 of those.

Klipsch have a great, but a little unique in sound, which personally I love. They are well loved, especially in the home cinema world.

If you like the active 51's and the idea of the 6's then consider the new 5's as they have even more connectivity.

I did a little unboxing video of them when we got our demo pairs over the summer.

RRP is similar to the Six's but that can come down if you ask the right person wink

Another consideration could be the SVS Prime Wireless, Active Bookshelf's

These have the added bonus of being able to directly connect to your wifi and stream from the majority of popular streaming apps, or direct from your phone using the DTS-PlayFi or SVS App.

As well as programmable pre-set buttons on the front to play specific playlists etc.

It does loose the internal DAC / USB option as although it have a USB it is currently for servicing and wireless sub connectivity.

Price is a little above budget, but lower that the Fives/Sixes you mention.

thanks guys,

@Vex yes I've just looked at the SVS prime too.

Also this Yamaha NX N500 looks decent, has anyone experienced it?

I have some and love them, fantastic sounding things and very handy with the integrated networking and USB DAC etc.

Maybe not quite as much low fat bass that you might be after, but the bass is much better than I expected for relatively compact bookshelf speakers and extremely tight and well controlled. Definitely listen to some if you get a chance. As far as I know they're essentially a pair of HS5 active studio monitors with a slightly different tune and the networking interface stuff added in, same setup with bi-amps in each speaker etc.

The only bad thing I can think of is that they make a faint very high pitched hum/whine on standby, I think its the wifi unit - you don't notice it in a living room but I'd get annoyed by it if they were beside my bed. Depends how fussy your ears are too of course, I've mentioned it to a few people that couldn't hear it at all.

No, I wondered why they didn't have a sub output when I bought mine - but then I've never actually felt like they needed a sub while listening to them!

The bass is good for the size of the speakers (I guess your other options are in the same category anyway), they just won't compare to floorstanders in that department.

My NX-N500s replaced a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 225s which are getting on for twice the box size with 6.5" woofers - they did have deeper bass but the Yamahas are tighter, clearer and more detailed.
