Spent the weekend a few weeks ago with my sister and brother in law. While she watched Strictly with my niece he and I listened to some vinyl. I came home and dug out my vast and. over forty year old collection.
amongst it lots of, in my opinion, decent stuff including an original first pressing of Pink Floyd The Wall with its £7 sticker on in immaculate condition. I now want to play it all.

I’ve set up a corner of the living room (no TV I’m here) with an old wing back chair so I can spend Sunday afternoons enjoying some music with a cat or ten on my lap (they love a bit of Fleetwood Mac).

I have some Technics separates (my ex invested some money in this years back and it was left with me) and an old Wharfedale turntable. But I’d like something new. £200 budget. What do I buy? Also willing to purchase a new amp at some point on a separate budget if I need to.

Help me please?

Rega Planar 1

It's worth the extra £50 over your budget.

Don't assume that spending 200 quid will get you anything better than what you already have.

We have a 30 year old Ariston from Richer Sounds, still as good as the day it was bought - and better than anything we could buy without spending several hundred today.

This is really subjective and you will get lots of opinions.

Mine, for what its worth, is that your £200 budget will just about get you a reasonable turntable and I would postpone replacement of any other components until more budget is available.

If you are putting sound quality first and don't want bells and whistles (such as ability to transfer vinyl to digital files) I'd go for something like this:

https://www.richersounds.com/hi-fi/turntables/proj...

Ideally though I'd be spending a bit more- eg

https://www.hifix.co.uk/rega-planar-1-turntable?gc...

However be careful, I have no idea how good or bad the Wharfedale table is- it might be better than you are assuming, such that you need a bigger budget to better it.. Also, if it isn't broken and is a 70s model, it is worth something in the 'Classic Hifi' market- have a look on EBay and you can get an idea of what you might get for it. .Same might be true of the Technics stuff if it is old enough.

Actually, even if broken your Wharfedale is worth something judging by this!

I have a Rega RP1, and it’s wonderful.

New version is called the P1.

You should be able to get one secondhand easily within your budget.

P.S. that copy of the wall, especially if it has the misaligned brick on the front cover is worth at least £30 in its own right.

If you decide to sell, look up the catalogue number on Discogs just in case.

I thought this might open a can of worms. Pretty much why I’ve never paid an interest to Audio Visual stuff because of this reason. And unfortunately my go to man passed away suddenly and unexpectedly a few weeks ago.

Thank you. Have heard this mentioned before too.

I was in a similar place to you 5 years ago, and bought an Audio Technica LP-120. It's been brilliant, no regrets. Around £250.

First question or check is what inputs your amp has.

In theory it should have a pair if phono input (marked as such) so that it can accept the lower level inputs generated by a record deck.

If so, great, any standard deck should plug in and work.

If not, then you will need either a seperate phono-stage or a record deck that has a phono-stage built in.

Pro-ject do offer both types of deck and plenty of manufacturers that make phono-stages.

Happy to help out if you need it.

V.

Got any pics of the Technics gear?

You may well not need to change the turntable at all, just the cartridge in it which will cost around £50.

Same with the amplifier and speakers.

If you can post model numbers or photos I'm sure people in here will be able to advise, it may be that the stuff you have is already better than modern budget equipment.

It’s nothing like the Linton deck. And I half imagine if I post pictures you’ll tell me it’s worthless and nothing like the money my ex said it cost ‘us’. More likely half and the rest went up his nose.

I’ll find some cables and bits out over the weekend and give it a go with his A&M 7” pressing of The Sex Pistols God Save The Queen because I know how much this meant to him.

Unfortunately I’m fairly sure he collected his vinyl instead of the children one weekend

I would never say another person's hifi is worthless as I love all of it. I've got a mixture, some of which people would say is worthless but to me it's still brilliant.

Technics is awesome gear anyway.

Shame. A 7" GSTQ on A&M sold for £13K last year.
