AV Receiver recommendations

Hi,

My Old pioneer VSX AV is lacking, it doesn't have full 2.2 support so I can't watch Sky UHD stuff through it. I've never got audio right through it either, it seems to keep cutting out randomly when watching sky.

Has anyone gone denon before? I like the look of the Denon AVR-X2500H.

Ideally I'd like this to last a few years and;

1. Support bluetooth streaming
2. Support Wifi so I can use Spotify on it

I don't know a fat lot about this sort of stuff but have recently purchased a Denon AVR X4700 and it's brilliant, a massive step up from the Yamaha it replaced. the android phone app is crap though, very slow and outdated

Bit expensive that one.

I wouldn't envisage using the app a lot tbh.

Yamaha is the other option Richer do but doesn't have extended stuff like bluetooth, dolby atmos such as the denon.

Be cautious of any of this years 8k /4k120hz stuff.

It is great but there is a rather major bug in the HDMI chipset wbmhich they are trying to figure out at the moment.

Denon, Marrantz and Yamaha are known to he hit at the moment. Whilst the issue might not be relevant to you now, as sources update and evolve it could become an issue for you in the future.

I am staying well away from AVR's until this issue is resolved.

Yes I read about this. In all honesty with a new baby arrived im going to be a long way off 8k technology!

You might be a while off 8k, but you may be forced by your sources

The 2500 has been superseded so you might struggle to buy it knew now. I’ve recently bought the 2600 for £429 from Peter Tyson online and am very pleased with it. Much better than the Sony it replaced in terms of setup and functionality. HEOS app works well too for streaming duties.

Anyone gone with a soundbar over AV?

Im in a room where wires will look rubbish and LG do a Soundbar with wireless speakers.

Yes. I binned off all the wires and AV for both our:

Living room setup (75” oled) for a Bose Soundtouch 700

Cinema room setup (120” ust projector) for a Bose Soundtouch 300

Not looked back at all - don’t miss the wires and extra remote and constant questions from the Mrs.

Yes I’ve lost a little depth of sound but not drastically and the “just works” factor far outweighs this!

I bought the Sony Strdn-1080, got good reviews and was a what hifi award winner - I had to send it back due to a constant low level hum, and a popping noise when fast forwarding Atmos tracks. Both known faults when I looked into it.

I’m hoping the Denon X2600 falls to a decent price, it’s been superseded by the X2700 but hasn’t fallen much yet

LG Soundbars don't have HDR10+ support (WTF?)

I no Sky were looking at HDR and BBC seems a bit poor?

I like the idea of the simplicity of the soundbar, and wireless speakers but don't want it lasting 5 minutes spec wise.

Just not sure I can pump out music at depth though so I can annoy the neighbours in summer LOL.

As you know Vex, I'll be needing a new one in January/February. If these issues still exist, what would you suggest. Stick with a 4K model and accept it may need upgrading again at some point or something else?

I use an older Onkyo AV receiver, but don't route any sources directly through it, so no need for 4k/8k support. Just switch all the video sources through the TV (LG 55 C9 OLED) and use HMDI eARC for sound output through the AV receiver.

Works perfectly, all HDR / Dolby Vision / HLG content of all devices works perfectly and the sound is just set to pass through mode to the receiver.

TV remote controls receiver on/off & volume through eARC/CEC, so never need to touch the receiver remote.

Mostly use an Odroid N2 + Kodi for content, along with real debrid. Plenty of 4k content to stream.

I've got a Yamaha DSP-AX761 AV receiver, it's approx 14 yrs old and recently it's been refusing to switch on (intermittent) so decided to go with a cheap'ish Yamaha replacement, the HTR-2071.

The old receiver was 7.1 and the new one is 5.1 but apart from that they seems similar spec-wise.

New one arrived today (from Richer Sounds - £226 delivered) so I can't recommend the Yamaha HTR-2071 yet but I'll report back once i've connected it up.

I've recently gone from an old Harman Kardon avr355 to a Denon AVC-X3700H and the difference is astounding.
Was 7.1 with the old setup, and trying the Denon as 7.2.1 at the mo. It certainly fills the room even on stuff that isn't an Atmos sound track

Interestingly there was a USA YouTube video where running the new PS5 in 4k120hz worked fine on a Marantz amp, if you set it up properly. So, whilst it hasn't be corroborated, it could be less of an issue than initially though or just limited to XBox chipsets.

So the expectation is that the Denon will be the same as they share alot of components.

Stock is starting to flow for us lower down the food chain, with pre-order stock arriving December.

I also do this, ARC/CEC out of the TV rather than switching in the AV receiver, works a treat, the sexy TV remote controls the TV (obviously), the receiver on/off and volume and the Virgin V6 box.
