We're moving home to a new-build with ceiling speakers in basically every room which are all wired back to a single point in the plant room. When we move in they will not be connected to anything.

What am I meant to do now? I would like to be able to play music controlled from my phone (I'm agnostic as to service but I currently use Spotify) and to be able to control the source/content in the different rooms (i.e. don't want music playing in the kids' bedrooms at night).

Do I have to get a load of Sonos amps and connect each room independently?

Yes, I am that stupid!

If you want each zone to be controllable separately, then yes you need multiple Sonos amps (you can drive up to 4 speakers off one amp, but those then have the same zone / volume). Or some other multi-room audio system of your choice.

The alternative is a multi-channel amplifier, but then you will have to have the same music on all speakers.

Lots of options.

How many rooms, how many zones do you want.

We have 4-5 rooms, and currently have a pair of inexpensive hifi amps at £50 each off eBay, linked to a pair of inexpensive Chromecast audio's each running 2-3rooms, and occasionally unplug a room if we want it off.

I have thought of buying a multi room speaker switch to give more flexablity as to which room plays what, but have yet to find one a like the look of!

What's your budget?

Certainly not a stupid question or one with a single answer.

If they all wire back to a central location then you’ll need a WiFi amplifier per zone not Bluetooth.

The system will then be controlled from a smart phone or tablet.

There are a few brands at varying levels including Sonos, Denon HEOS, Hamilton to name a few.

We sell a lot of multiroom so happy to help if you need it. Few bundles here: https://bit.ly/3lKqB2M

Add to that list, BlueSound and their BluOS app. They are also licencing their solution to others, so NAD, Monitor Audio and Dali have all adopted it.

I am just pricing up an upgrade for a client and we are going the Monitor Audio 4 streamers in 1 Box and their (very nice) matching & Bridgeable 12 Channel Amp, for less than 4 Sonos Amps (just)
