Want a new TV asap, I have always had Panny or Sony but I think LG is the way to go?

As my eyes are now 57 years old I am reluctant to pay for the sharpest tool in the box plus my Panny is 9 years old and a 3D Plasma model so I guess anything will seem amazing after it?

I budgeted £3k ish but cannot see past this

In comparison to this

https://www.johnlewis.com/lg-oled77cx6la-2020-oled...

Help me justify or not please.

Cheers

4k will be more than an adequate update for a few years yet.
There isn't all that much broadcast in 4k at the moment either I seem to recall nerd

My friend upgraded from a 46inch Panasonic GT30 plasma about 18 months ago to a 50 or 55inch LG 4k 3D curved screen. And he still hasn't seen a remarkable improvement in image quality over the old plasma! (Other than the obvious blacker blacks)

8K will probably go the way of 3D content......

The current 'best buy' at ~75" (or at 55 or 65" for that matter) is the 2020 LG CX range which is OLED.

Plasmas have always had good pictures and good blacks but power consumption was an issue.

That £900 set gets pretty good reviews. It's not OLED nor the latest processing so black levels might be more noticeable, and apparently the software doesn't have a lot of the catch up services which may or may not be an issue depending on what you watch and what other sources you have.

As in all technology, the incremental benefit gets smaller and smaller. For what it's worth I've just bought a 2020 LG 65" GX (gallery version of the CX) and the picture is noticeably better (and definitely 'blacker) than my 3 year old 55" LED set which was a best buy at the time for similar money.

4k OLED. Don't bother with anyhting else for now. It will be a relative waste of money and looks like you have the budget.

Neither of those is 8k, one is OLED & the other LCD - that's where the price difference is. What do you watch & under what sort of conditions? Movies in a dark room, go OLED. General TV all day in a bright room, go LED.

Shed loads of information here:

Do you have to have it now? Lockdown means you can't go & see them in the shop & the 2021 models will be out fairly soon.

8k is more a monitor thing at the mo?

For 75 inch TV

For 1080p (1920×1080) resolution, you must sit:
10 feet or closer to see all available detail

For 4k (3840×2160) resolution, you must sit:
5 feet or closer to see all available detail

For 8k (7680×4320) resolution, you must sit:
2 feet or closer to see all available detail

yes Get the best 4k you can afford. Make sure it has correct implementation of HDR and so on.

8ft from a 75”+ screen is pretty close. I thought optimal distance for that size 4K screen was further than that ?
I imagine you’d have to move your head to see the entire screen at that range...wouldn’t be for me but would definitely be immersive !

My numbers could be misleading in missing out the point you start to see the difference.

You would see difference at 4ft with 8k, but only get full benefit at 2ft. You would need to be mobile!

This one is better.

I sit 10ft from a 48" LG OLED and 4k gives a noticeably sharper picture over normal HD.

Everything about that tv is an improvement over my previous 42" panasonic plasma.

Agreed. I upgraded to a 48" LG CX and I expected it to be better than my old Panasonic 50" LCD, but darn.

8K content is the issue. The samsung TV's have a random planet videography channel that goes up to 8K which is good for showing what 8K can do. Thats about it.

Bought a 55" LG CX and it's a fantastic TV. I've not bought one for myself for years and it's my first OLED but the jump compared to what I had before (Samsung) is huge

If your'e going to bite the bullet and go OLED (Do your research to see if it suits your usage) then LG is the obvious choice and where my money would probably go. Most (if not all) OLEDS use an LG screen anyway.

I wouldn't buy an LG LCD though.

Dave, we have the first one you linked to (LG 75") on the wall in our training room. You're welcome to come and have a look once you've had your vaccine biggrin

We use it more for Netflix than it's intended use and I certainly can't fault it. I definitely can't see how anything could be £2,500+ as good, to my eyes anyway.

Cheers guys

Alex that’s the one I bought - at £899 it’s so much better than the one I had that it’ll do, my diabetic 57 year old eyes won’t appreciate OLED biggrin

All set up, very happy, UHD pause / rewind is a faff on sky but all good. Sound much better than expected.

Shame the panny is worth nothing even the kids don’t want it for games !!
