Chaps, anybody with experience that can throw some light?
I’ve had a Denon surround sound amp and DVD for some time, the DVD started playing up some time ago (press play and it wouldn’t start), replaced it with a Sony dvd yesterday, for the life of me I can’t get a picture to the TV, sound works if I input using a coax cable, but doesn’t if I use HDMI cable, swapping cable with sat-box doesn’t work, swapping HDMI inputs with sat-box doesn’t work, if I plug the dvd straight into the tv it works fine.
I’m starting to assume that the circuit in the amp that decodes the signal from the dvd is causing the problem.
Any thoughts?
Thanks
G

Was your previous one via HDMI?

And all your inputs were definitely correct?

Is it worth connecting a laptop via HDMI, seeing if that works then plugging the DVD in?

Yep, previous was on hdmi, I can set up the inputs with my eyes shut I’ve done it that many times! sat-box works on both HDMI inputs, which makes me think there must be something different being done to the DVD signal before it is outputted that has gone tits up.

with you saying you are now using a sony DVD I am correct in assuming this is an old player? There might be some other issue with the HDMI output going to the amp which is not affecting the direct-to-tv signal. Is it possible to try with a bluray which might have a more modern hdmi output?

I've got an older all-singing AV amp that plays nicely with everything I connect to it except a HD Firestick. They just won't work together.

I suspect that your new DVD player is outputting a picture format that your amp won't pass.
If your amp is old enough (probably over 8 years, but guessing) it may not pass a 1080 signal.
Try connecting the new DVD player direct to the TV and see if you can turn the video output down to 720 or 576 then reconnecting it to the amp and see what happens.

Thats where i was going. I suspect the new DVD is actually a blueray and trying to out 1080P, Sky HD is 1080i max.

If you connect the new dvd direct to the tv and then go into the settings and change the resolution down to 1080i or 720p, save it, and then reconnect through the Denon.

Thanks, had to set at 720, presumably no where near the “full experience” would it be worth upgrading the amp? Richer sounds are recommending a Sony at £250 which would work with my 5 Kef eggs and sub.

Thanks for the update
Without knowing what you are running at the moment it is difficult to advise- I’d always recommend going for the best AV amp you can do as there is less need to update if you get a 4K tv etc.

I’ve got a 4K Sony tv, and now a blue ray player, so guess I should splash some cash on a new amp

The main difference could be sound formats. The player you have bought is probably a Bluray player as VEX said - if this is the case your new amp will give you access to the Hidef sound formats which you haven't got at present (Dolby True HD etc) which are much better than what you have, but usually only available on Bluray discs (I don't know enough about online sound formats to advise you there).

You may also get a better picture out of your DVDs (better scaling).

A friend of mine has one of the Sonys and the performance is really good for the money (I prefer it to Denon, not quite as good as Yamaha).
Whatever you decide, enjoy your system.
