My wife is badgering me to get an 85" TV for the lounge as the 65" we already have isn't big enough!! The really weird thing is that I'm resisting when it would usually be the other way around.

I've narrowed it down to 3 models, but I'm just not tech savvy enough to know the difference between them and if the PQI between the Q60 and the Q70 will make any noticeable difference. I'm leaning toward one of the Samsung models rather than the LG for no real reason than I think they are better?!?!?!

I need the wisdom that is abundant on this forum to help steer me! (My lounge is big enough to take this size screen without having my nose pressed on it)

I've had Sony products for years, but I'm ruling them out due to the shocking "smart" features of my current one and the fact that they don't have an AppleTV app and I would need to buy another box (unless they do and I'm wrong on this too!!!)

Nothing to add but I clicked on the links expecting the prices to start with a 3 or 4, had no idea the enormous screens are down to that level.

These are budget big screen LCD TVs so aren't going to be the pinnacle of picture quality and hence the low prices.

Based on the below id go for the LG since it has hdmi 2.1 and has 120hz refresh rate whereas the Samsung is 60hz panel.
LG also has Dolby Vision and plays pretty much everything else, whereas Samsung is HDR10+/HLG.

Another thing to keep in mind is what content you will be watching on it mainly, saw the Samsung in a shop playing SD or HD and it looked dreadful, might be because I was looking at it from a couple of metres.
Maybe it looks better from further back.

Apart from the above I've not seen all 3 telly's properly but just going on specs and reviews then would be the LG.

Thanks for the insight.

I think I will put it off for a bit longer yet, but it does at least give me a bit of a steer.

Are there new models due out that will drop the prices of the current models?

RTings put the Q60 above the LG.

Its difficult to find any useful info on the LG such as dimming zones, method, nits etc.

What if I did throw a Sony into the mix?

https://www.richersounds.com/tv-projectors/sony-br...

I am brand loyal as a rule, so would like to stick with a Sony product as I have never had an issue with one (other than the smart apps on my current TV disappearing some time ago).

How important is HDMI 2.1? Would this just be future proofing to have it or is it becoming more essential?

Sorry for the thread hijack but I’m considering the same size change. I’ve a 65in Samsung, that LG seems absurd value and as I’m mainly HD SKY Q and UHD sport and movies via apps I can’t do any better for the money can I?

thanks.

HDR is probably one of the biggest advances in TV picture and the LG appears to be terrible at it so I would avoid. The lack of range and dimming will lessen the impact of Dolby vision etc so I wouldnt put too much emphasis on it.

HDMI 2.1 will be used for next gen games consoles outputting 4k at 120fps. If that wont be used by you then again I wouldnt worry about it too much

AVForums might have some reviews of the screens you are looking at.

It might be that they all use the same panel but have different processing applied to them.

Well, after much deliberation, I have gone for one of these....

https://www.richersounds.com/sony-bravia-kd85xh950...

Managed to get a really good deal (I think?) on a "refurb" unit that was returned. Delivery should be early next week, so I'll report back once installed and set up.

I nearly bought the very same model, but ended up going with the Samsung Q80T (also purchased from RS). Had mine up for a couple of weeks now, and really impressed with it.

It arrived yesterday!!

It's big! It's really big!! It fits perfectly for where it needed to go though, so that's all good (I did measure several times).

First impressions are that I love it. The picture in 4K is superb and is a step up from my "old" TV (which was also 4K) as the colours are brighter and the darks are darker. The sound is OK, but I expected nothing more. TVs are designed for the picture these days, not the sound.

Apps work superbly and being able to cast from multiple devices is really useful.

I've not put any gaming on yet, so I'll see how that is tonight when my son gets home from school.

I'm guessing your living room is not a 12'x12' box in a tiny 2-bed new build? lol

Haha, we've got a 75" Samsung in the boardroom at work and I honestly couldn't imagine needed a TV that size in my home, let alone bigger!

Since when has logic always follow what's "needed"?

I am lucky as my lounge is approx 20' x 20'. The previous occupants extended the house and had a big lounge built specifically to take a big TV. They then decided that the house was too big and wanted to move!!

I paid £2400 for it. It was up for £2500, but the salesman told me that there might be some wiggle room on the price, so I made him wiggle.

No idea what is "refurb" about it. It's been out of the box and the power cable had been out, but the remote and other bits were all still sealed.

They said that a refurb could be anything, but it is unlikely that it's a faulty unit. Usually with a TV this size, it's gone out to a customer who has found it to be too big and returned it it. Once out of the box it has to go back to the service department and has to be sold as refurb.

My lounge is a fair size and the 85 doesn't actually look out of place at all. I was surprised myself, since they look huge in store. We had a 55 inch here for past 10 years, and I now moved that to another room to make way for the 85.

The sofa directly facing the TV is 4.5m from the screen, for context of room size.

Pics attached.
