I’m looking for some new wired IEMs and spotted that Shure are doing deals on the SE425 (£125) and SE535 (£179).

I’ve had Shure IEMs in the past (currently using a really old pair of SE215s) so it’s a brand I know is reliable and these seem like really good deals.

Question is: I know the SEs are old now so, even at the bargain price, I wondered how they stacked up against some of the newer brands operating in the sub £200 range such as the Hidizs Mermaid MS4, the TinHiFi P1 and the 1MORE Quad Driver? The assurance of an established brand like Shure is a definite positive but, realistically, these won’t be “forever” earphones but probably just something for a few years.

Thanks

You need to try them, just because something is new, shiny, etc doesn't mean it is absolutely better. Products evolve possibly due to some technological breakthrough or the designer trying to make it more cheaply for similar performance i.e. more profit.

People's perception of sound and sound quality is very personal so listening before purchasing is essential. I have some Westones but the sound stage is quite narrow, if I had known I would chosen something different.

It’s not easy to try out various IEMs, especially back-to-back so you can easily recall the differences and preferences. Plus, many of the brands out now are internet-only purchases (and, I suspect, in COVID times hifi shops would be even less keen than usual on letting customers stick IEMs in their ears before buying).

This is a sub-£200 purchase so I’m not investing a huge amount of time into it - a bit of internet research is enough for me.

Good spot, and thanks for sharing!

I purchased some SE215s at the start of the year, reliant on web reviews, particularly the site below which summarises the incremental differences between the range as a ready reckoner:

One set of SE535s on the way. However note that the reduced prices do not include the RMCE-BT2 neckband, where previously they did. But sound quality is diminished vs plugging in, or at least with Tidal's hi-res quality service.
