Odd one has occurred today.

We have two Sky Q Mini boxes each attached by HDMI to a Toshiba 50" UHD TV (I can't remember nor see the model number). Using TV Speakers. Same TV in both rooms.

All of a sudden the sound stopped working from one Sky Mini Box (lets call it A) with both apps (Netflix etc) and Sat programmes. Mute not on, volume not at 0! Sound is ok when using the TV Apps.

So immediate thought was check mini box settings. All the same as before (compared with other box). Swapped mini boxes and the box A works on her tv - her box (box B) does not do sound on my tv.

So now - thinking cables. Changed HDMI cable - still nothing. (I checked the cables with other sky mini box). Therefore am sure its the HDMI module on the TV. I have checked all three HDMI sockets with same result.

Also, all HDMI sockets are enabled in the TV menu.

Am I missing something? Its def TV unit related - box A and B both work with same cables on the other TV. Can a HDMI module just stop all three sockets? I don't have any adapter to try to connect to differing socket...... the TV has VGA, USB and the Red/White/yellow.

Have not tried a TV reset yet - might do that now.

Would appreciate any wise knowledge coming to the rescue....!

Many thanks in advance

Sometimes, when you rule out all that is a possible cause, what's left, regardless of how improbable, is probably the cause.

In this case: Sky and HDMI.

Sky has a track record for buggering it up. Their software / firmware updates fix three things but break something else. It may well be that they've done something that messes with the HDMI handshake that works out the common base standards between the box and the TV. Most TVs are unaffected, but your Toshibas are ones that are on the edge.

Of course you're going to say 'well why does the box / TV swap work when both TVs are the same model?' The honest answer is that I can't be sure. Maybe the firmware is different between the two sets or there's some other minor difference such as a chip batch?

Do the TVs have the ability to search the 'net for firmware updates? Have you made sure the Sky boxes are outputting PCM stereo audio. What happens if you switch to Dolby Digital?

I had one of the local museums ring me about a problem with one of their commercial media players in a gallery. It had been running fine for the three years since the display was built, but suddenly it stopped working.

I did all the usual trouble-shooting stuff, swapping players and cables and PLUS, updated firmware on the players and tried new media cards and swapped the file content, tested an EDID manager; I even tried a UPS. Nothing worked.

Finally I resigned myself to the conclusion that the player and TV were no longer compatible. That's not as daft as it sounds. Electronics don't last forever. We've seen lots of occasions where a capacitor or two have failed and so made a TV stop working. HDMI is very dependent on everything working within tolerance. If the capacitors involved with the HDMI board on either the source or display were going out of spec then it's possible that the HDMI handshake would not work correctly.

In the case of the museum the answer was to change brand of TV. Once done then everything worked again. I don't propose that as a solution for you. Your situation is different mainly because the source box is rented and so Sky has some responsibility for ensuring that their equipment is compatible.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed reply. Much appreciated.

The TV in question ….. yes it does have the capability and am going to reinstall and update it. Unsure whether there is a difference in software states (on the mini boxes and TVs) between the two, but hopefully if my teenager ever gets out of the room then I will check!

Will also check if I can revert back one to the other……… eliminates that if I can!

What bugs me is the picture is perfect, there is just no sound!

Just thought I would close this off.

Both TVs were the same software standard, which confused me even more.

Reset the TV back to factory and then did the recheck/update thing. TV told me no update was necessary but then said "continue with update" (or words to that effect). Having done so, well, I go the the bottom of my stairs, sky mini box in all three HDMI sockets now works.

Thanks Lucid!
