Recently, like many old gits, gone back to vinyl following a new deck purchase by Mrs T

Over the past few months adding to my collection (why oh why did i throw all those records out??!) and on the whole so far, so good.

But.... thought I'd picked up a couple of signs that sounded like the drive belt was slipping, not all the time and difficult to pick up, and only on a couple of recent purchases

Then another new purchase, Dire Straits Making Movies (Don't judge) and half way though Romeo & Juliet and oh my god - save my poor ears, and then a bit on the other side through another track

So, question is, can a faulty pressing sound like the the belt is slipping, sitting here listen to a different record and no problem......

(Don't know if its somethong to do with the way new records are pressed, but already had to return a couple of purchases for scratches - more than i remember doing back in the day)

Have you checked the pulley spindle mount to make sure it is firmly bolted to the underside of the deck?

I bought a new Pro-Ject turntable about 4 years ago and when I unpacked it the spindle was slightly angled due to the internal mounting screws being loose. My issue was the belt would slip off, but I would guess that if the spindle was not fully secure it could affect the tension enough to cause slippage?

Alternately, can you try a different power supply? It might be that the power block is not providing a stable supply causing the motor speed to vary slightly?

Both long shots admittedly.

A duff pressing can absolutely sound like the belt is slipping. It sounds as if you are referring to wow and flutter. If a record is pressed slightly off-centre, or is warped, then pitch stability is instantly compromised and instruments will sound out of tune.

If you find this effect is only audible with certain records, old or new, then that is the most likely explanation.
