Good living room Surround Sound Setup

Ok got the new Pioneer Kuro from the great Northern shopkeeper. Have the HD streaming to HDX player.

Just need to sort out the surround sound setup!

Nothing large, nothing over the top, just compact small and effective. Think minimilist, and not silly cash though.

Any suggestions ?

Maybe put down a rough budget since theres so much at different price ranges. since you have a kuro, i'm assuming you want something of similar quality.

my non-professional oppinion would be to pick a surround amp around 300-400pounds. anyone of the ones from the other thread currently running are good. just take in mind how many hdmi outputting devices you'll be installing. i.e. bluray, ps3, sky HD. The yamahas, onkyos, sonys and denons are all pretty highly regarded at the moment.

Then just pick up a matched set of surrround speakers. something like kef eggs shouldnt cost more than 400-500 i reckon. maybe even budget for a subwoofer if it doesnt come with one.

one of the more knowledgable afficandos will probably advise something totally different though, lol.

one thing to bear in mind is if you have the KURO (and prob other high end TVs) you will probably want different settings per source so may end up using HDMI cables direct into your TV anyway, that is what I am doing. Also SKY HD loses it's 5.1 if you use the HDMI cable into the TV and then our to your TV so you may end up using a TOSLINK cable from SKY box to amp anyway.......

You really need and state a rough budget as it's so hard to give advice without it. And what type of speakers you would like ie Wall mounted small or stand mounted or even a Plasma mounted sound bar.


Basically a currys type system or something from a good local dealer.

I'd go with an Onkyo receiver and Jamo speakers personally. They're very living room friendly.

I would go Onkyo SR606 or Dennon 1909 £300 Richer sounds Pannasonic BD 35 bluray £200 player KEF 2005.3 speakers £550 allow £100 for cables and decent speaker wire

Paying heed to your "not silly cash" requirement, the Sony HSS1300 and HT-IS100 systems are excellent VFM. You can buy the later in a bundle along with the widely acclaimed BDP-S350 Blu Ray player (package is called HTPB350ISFI).
