I'm after some hi-fi bits (speakers, amp and CD player) and as I'm on a budget I'd rather get decent second hand stuff rather than cheap new stuff.
So where's the best place to look? Is eBay generally OK for things like this or should I be looking somewhere more specialised like avforums?

Hello,

I'm quite good at this. In order of usefulness:

1) HifiWigwam - www.hifiwigwam.com
2) Hifi Adverts - www.hi-fiadverts.co.uk
3) Pink fish media - http://www.pinkfishmedia.net/

Ebay is expensive for mainstream stuff, but bargains do come up occasionally. I'd say get involved in the forums first, the guys there love their hifi and look after it well. Ebay you've no idea who you are buying from.

ETA - You want the "classified" or "private ad" section. Also I have never found AVforums useful for hifi kit.

Check out the Magazines as well. HiFi World has a pretty good classified ads section and most of the bigger dealers have ads for their second hand and x demo kit.

I've bought and sold very successfully on www.hififorsale.com and would recommend it. Pink Fish is also very good. I've just sold a piece of B&O kit through hififorsale this week as it happens. smile

Yep avforums may well be your best bet. Buy from a regular trader there and should be hassle free.

I see you are in Norfolk. Have you tried Emporium Shed?

Not used them myself but I know a chap who is an audiophile and he swears by them.

I think hififorsale is the same as hifi-adverts? Looks similar!

Thanks for all the responses, I think I'll have to keep an eye on those sites for a bit to try and learn a thing or two first, and change my definition of 'decent'!

Depends on your definition of "Decent". I recently bought a Denon DVD2900 for £50. It is in superb condition and was originally £600. However if I wanted a Cyrus 1 or 2 amp they are well sort after so even a mediocre one will cost a fair amount. If a piece of Hi-Fi has a good reputation it's reflected in the price.
