how to connect v+ box to 2 tvs
Discussion
Hi,
I had normal virgin cable setup with one box upstairs to one tv there. When it was installed i got the engineer to run coax down to the basement bedroom so i could watch tv there as well ( albeit the same channel that was on upstairs ).
I upgraded to a V+ box with HD on friday but didnt realise it does not have a coax ( is that the right term? ) output so there is nothing to connect the coax cable going downstairs. It has the hdmi output which goes to the current tv upstairs. It has scart sockets too.
How can I get it to downstairs? Can you get a scart to coax convertor thinghy - if so will this work ok?
Thanks

Is it one of the newer Samsung V+ boxes? The older Scientific Atlanta boxes do have a Coax/RF out however this is disabled when in HDMI/HD mode!
Anyway to answer your question, yes you could send a composite video signal down your coax from the scart however you would not have audio, so you would need another cable run in.
You could run in a second HDMI cable, then split the signal using an HDMI splitter, that would give you HD pictures as well.

aaargh its quite a way i really dont want to run a hdmi cable that would not really be viable. any other way?
thanks
You could use one of these (this is wireless)
You can also get an HDMI to cat5 convertor. You could then route (via your A/V amp or an HDMI switch) the HDMI output to the convertor when you want to watch upstairs.

CPC Farnell have some, for example this one:
http://cpc.farnell.com/1/1/38528-rf-modulator-mod1...
Will modulate your SCART audio and video onto whatever RF channel you choose and send it down the coax. You might want to look at a PowerMid or some kind of IR sender too, so you can change channel. And maybe get a spare remote control for downstairs.
Another way, possibly you have a VCR somewhere, I think some of them (sony for example) will RF modulate the AV SCART input - you set the VCR to whichever SCART AV and then feed the RF output downstairs. I'm pretty sure that's how I used to achieve what you're doing.

cool that gives me more hope thanks - theres a vcr under the virgin box so will have a play!http://cpc.farnell.com/1/1/38528-rf-modulator-mod1...

so i have a vcr - just a cheapo matsui job.http://cpc.farnell.com/1/1/38528-rf-modulator-mod1...

it has 1 scart and a rf in and a rf out.
if i connect the scart to the v+ box ( theres 2 scarts on this - one labelled video and one labelled tv ) and the rf out to the cable going downstairs..
should that feed the signal without doing anything as it doesnt seem to whatever scart i put it on on the v+ box.
other option would be to split the rf input into 2 and plug one into the video and one into the v+ box would this work?
dont want to spend money if poss but if I do need to think its pretty likely to work!
thanks

There is another issue, when the Samsung V+ box is set to HDMI/HD out, it may disable the scart outputs, not sure on this model but may be a reason why you are not getting a picture.

You need to plug the Scart lead into the Video/VCR in scart socket on the VCR, then make sure the VCR display/channel is set to Video or Aux or L1?? You then need to tune your downstairs TV to pick up the VCR RF channel. I would check it works through the upstairs TV first.

Yeah that, and here's how to tune the downstairs TV the easy way. Plug the upstairs->downstairs coax into the VCR output, then play a video you can easily recognize. Turn the upstairs TV to the VCR SCART input so you can see it. Then go downstairs, make sure the coax is plugged into the TV input, and then go unto channel 6, and tune until you see the video you chose. There is another issue, when the Samsung V+ box is set to HDMI/HD out, it may disable the scart outputs, not sure on this model but may be a reason why you are not getting a picture.
Now go back upstairs, stop the video, and use the VCR remote to select whichever SCART has the V+ box going into it. Once you can see it upstairs, you should be able to see it downstairs. I have my whole house connected to one STB like this (using a 4-way distribution amp), so anything we can watch in the living room, we can watch anywhere.
Hi Petemurphy,
I am having the same problem as you.
I have just received the new Samsung V+ box and no RF output. I wanted to run the RF cable around the house to the bedrooms upstairs and the kitchen but cannot with the new box (old one was a telewest one and had an RF output, so was easy to setup).
I've been looking around the web and came accross your post. You said you got a Modulator from Maplin. Can you tell me the one you got and do you think it will work in the system i described above?
Many Thanks
